I just purched (EBAY) a set of JBL speakers (LC-1, L880sS, L810s, L8400). I would like to know what reasonable priced ($600) receiver would drive them? In addition, what high end receiver should I go to in 8 months? Jack

What are the impedance and sensivity ratings of these speakers?

JBL's are usually easy to drive. With that said, are your mains towers of bookshelves. With towers, regardless of impedance and sensitivity numbers, I usually like to drive them with an external amp.

For your setup, I would recommend a mid range Yamaha, Harman Kardon, or Denon receiver to drive the center and the rears. Purchase a 2 channel external amp to drive your two mains. Parasound is a very good brand that wont cost you an arm and a leg.

If you are not too finicky about sound quality, you can even purchase a multi-channel external amp that can drive all your speakers.

The Denon AVR-1908 does not have preouts, so the EP1500 cannot be used with that receiver. The Yamaha and the H/K, however, do have preouts.

I figure I will throw this out there as well. The Marantz SR-4001. It has similar features and specifications to the Yamaha and H/K receivers, at a very reasonable price.

Or you could buy 2 EP1500 and bridge them. Give those L880's ~800W of juice each.:eek::eek:

I also second a HK receiver, being the owner of a simple 5.1 HK receiver (HK AVR 145) I reccomend HK for its power and clarity, as it utilizes high current amplifiers. Here's a reasonably priced HK to look at:

Hey Jack, I have the same towers and center that you just bought and I use a Yamaha RX-V659. It does a pretty good job for my needs. I am still waiting to pull the trigger on a pair of L830's and get rid of my Blose cube surrounds.

If you are looking for a receiver in the $600 range I also agree with either the Yamaha RX-V661 or the H/K 247. However, I think I would choose the Onkyo TX-SR805 for only $100 more if I was in your shoes and could stretch my money. This is an exceptional receiver for the money, and you could use it as a preamp if you wish to add an amplifier later.

Good luck.

Thanks for the feedback. I purchased my JBLs on EBAY. They have been selling a lot of L820s and L830s.

Maybe one of these:

Yamaha RX-V661
Harman Kardon AVR-247

Behringer is not known for their quality in many circles. Not saying that they are bad, but many bass players have issues with their products. I have always heard good things about Carvin amps. Very reasonably priced and good quality. If you are going for an external amp might want to check them out. http://www.carvin.com/products/group.php?cid=15 Oh yea, and their amps are good down to 2 OHMs stable.

Has anybody actually looked at the spec sheet on those speakers? 8 Ohms, 91 db sensitivity. Any decent mid level receiver will drive these with ease. There is no need for an outboard amp. Having said that, if the OP finds he wants more power, he can use the surround rear channels to bi-amp the front towers, since that is also an option.

The Onkyo 805 looks like a fine choice.

The Behringer EP1500 and EP2500 are very solid full range amplifiers, with stellar build quality. I would expect them to be very reliable.

Since your JBL L series were purchased on EBAY.. something you might consider is the Harmon Audio Store on EBAY for purchasing your reciever if you go with Harmon Kardon. They sell refurbished units...(returned or something) and offer a 2 year warranty on them. You can often pick these units up at a substantial savings. I have purchased two from them and everything has worked perfectly and was in perfect cosmetic condition except for the one that was damaged in shipping. Harmon Audio replaced the entire unit with no questions asked...

Happy Hunting...

I appologize for my earlier post. I was passing along information that I have heard from other forums and personal knowledge about Behringer products. I do not have any experience with their standalone amps, but their bass products are not know for quality so I made a bad assumption about their other products.
