thanks for the suggestion!

powered speakers? the thought didn't even cross my mind.

why are these "better?"

I can't find a good review of mackie speakers on the web for stereo listening. can you provide more specifics?
These are near field monitors perfect for a small room. They are used by musicians and recording studios because of their high quality neutral sound. I urge a listen. I will hunt for a review for you. I heard them for the first time at a fellow enthusiasts home along with the best Polk, Paradigm, and Klipsch bookshelves. The Mackies blew them all away.

I'm a big DMC Electronics fan. I bought PSB Image B25's from David as "blemished." I looked and looked and looked.........the "blemish" was a tiny tear in the paper covering on the rear of one speaker.

Hi. Nice little list.

The GB series are basically souped-up Images (which I do own). If interested in fine bookshelves from PSB at such budget, I'd personally listen to the Synchrony and Platinum lines. Unfortunately, these lines are significantly more money.

DMC electronics is selling "blemished" Platinum M2 monitors for $1,195. While that's $395 over your budget, you are getting top-of-the-line, of perhaps 6 lines, within PSB. I personally can't tell they are blemished to save my life, and you can speak with David there to personally ask how it looks.

That all being said as a PSB owner, I would love to have me some Sierras as well. ;)

I've had both Classic 3's and Sierra 1's. If the majority of my listening involved classical, I'd probably lean toward the NHT's. The only issue with the Classic 3's is they have a pretty low sensitivity (Stereophile measured 83 db) so what you power them with can be an issue. The Sierra was probably overall the best bookshelf speaker I've owned though. It's bass response is exceptional for a bookshelf speaker. From my experience with both, if I were buying a pair of bookshelf speakers, I'd pick the Sierra's.
