New Speakers Arrangement on my HT Room

Hi guys,

have been reading a lot that the ideal situation for the L/C/R setup is to have the 3 front speakers exactly the same ones (make & model), so I decided to do some experiments, as I do have one extra pair of brand new bookshelves laying' round (JBL Studio 38 II - not exactly the same model as the ones I'm using though).

My first trial was to change the center channel (EC - 35) by one S 38II, so I immediately felt some improvement on center channel (punchier bass & dialogs with more authority).

Second step was to swapp the L/R mains (E - 50), so I plugged in the S 38II as L/R and one E-50 as Center channel. That was an even better choice, up to the point that this new configuration will be now my standard though.

The entire front setup blends pretty well and I'm happy with the end results.
Below you'll find some shots of my new setup.

In other hand, I was a bit intrigued by the fact that the original center channel (EC-35) has a FR of 75Hz-20KHz, a sensivity of 91dB and a power handling of 150W, whereas the E-50 has a FR of 45Hz-20KHz, a sensivity of 90dB and a power handling of 175W and finally the S 38II has the same FR and power as the E-50, except for the sensivity, which is 89dB.

Have also found that the S 38II (both powered by an outboard amp.), do sound better that the E - 50's...

Question: wasn't the EC-35 supposed to better perform than the bookshelves?? I know that the bookshelves has more wattage though and that might explain why they do perform better. Any ideas on such??

Any comments will be appreciated.

Thanks!

hey, I see you have two pioneer players ... don't they BOTH turn on and execute the same commands when you use the remote?

Yes, they do, but I can live with that (the other one is the DV 393).
BTW Mike, how's your 696 performing so far? I'm pretty happy with mine though.

Cheers.

it's good enough ... next to HD ... this is the best :)

thanks for the info ... I guess if you have a receiver, it doesn't really matter if the other one is playing.

You're right Mike, next step will be HD though.

BTW, was a bit tempted last week. While in Chicago area I saw the new HD DVD Toshiba A2 for $ 399... and I told myself I better wait for another year or so; matter of fact I'm not in a hurry and in 1 year time you might be buying the same stuff for 30-40% less though...

Cheers.

Yeah just like the DVD+R and the DVD-R I am waiting for more dual players to hit the market... HD-DVD & Blue Ray... More bang for your buck, seeing as they aren't going 1 way or the other..

Is there anybody willing to comment on the above??

Thanks.
