Hey,
I am very new to the home theater life. I am a DIYer so I am learning as I go. I might have jumped the gun on a few purchases so I am trying to make my system work that I currently have work without spending anymore money and I have hit a roadblock and need help.

I have a Epson 2045 projector, Sony STR-DH770 receiver, and a Vizio SB3651-E6 sound system.
I have my Amazon Fire Box, DVD player, and Dish network box all hooked up to my receiver and then the receiver is sending video to my projector. I have all that working with no problems.

My big issue I am trying to resolve is the audio. My sound bar has HDMI In, HDMI ARC, Digital, Optical, Aux, and Bluetooth. As of right now I am running on Bluetooth but I do not like it, it is a pain. My receiver has an HDMI Out and ARC output that I am running to my Projector for the video. My Projector does not have an HDMI ARC label it just has 2 HDMI inputs. My Sound System does have and HDMI ARC output and an HDMI In.

So my question is, can I use a normal HDMI on my projector to go to my Sound System's HDMI ARC and use that for my sound across all devices?

I am realizing now, that it might have been better for my situation and wallet to just get an HDMI switcher and I am still willing to do that but didn't know if I could move forward with what I have.

Thanks for the help

Hi Danny,

Welcome to the Forum.

You have an interesting puzzle, and mix of equipment. As you are running DVD (and therefore only lossy sound codecs) it would usually be easier just to run a Toslink optical cable, or Coaxial cable, from the Sony STR-DH770 receiver to your Vizio SB3651-E6 sound system but there are no audio outputs of this type on the Sony STR-DH770.

With the Vizio SB3651-E6 sound system you are just using the Sony STR-DH770 receiver as a connection point for your inputs, which really isn't what it was designed to be. A higher end receiver would have given you more flexibility in your scenario, especially with outputs.

But I think you can "daisy chain" your connections (if all the HDMI Handshaking goes well). Connect your HDMI out from the Sony STR-DH770 receiver to the lower (orange) HDMI input on the Vizio SB3651-E6 sound bar. Then connect the upper (green) HDMI output on the Vizio SB3651-E6 sound bar to either of the HDMI inputs on your Epson 2045 projector.

See Visio SB3651-E6 Manual

Please post back and tell us how it goes.

You should get an HDMI switcher.

A/V receivers are designed to connect to speakers. Not speaker bars. They have built in amplifications, audio processing, and video processing.

Your speaker bar has built in speakers, amplifications, audio, and video processing. Basically, it's an all-in-one unit.

So, if you need to hook up multiple HDMI sources, then get a $50 HDMI switcher instead. You are going down a very complex road if you stick with what you are doing. The other option is to get some actual speakers and run speaker wire to them. It will quite possibly give you a better sound experience using cheap speakers in a proper surround configuration than using the speaker bar.

Accessories4Less has complete 5.0 systems starting at $50 which will really doa good job head-to-head against almost any speaker bar out there...
