Speaker porn…

Here are the first photos of the yet unnamed new Salk speaker (sometimes called the HT4 or The Beast). They will be shown this weekend at the AKFest in Livonia, MI.

And from the rear, showing the grill covering the open back of the midrange section...

The tweeter is a custom RAAL ribbon. The unusual looking midrange is made by FAL. The woofer section has one 12" "TC Sounds-type" driver and two 12" passive radiators. This particular pair of cabinets was fashioned from trans-laminated bamboo. The woofer walls are 2" thick with internal bracing. The cabinets are in two sections and weigh in at 155 pounds. The woofer is said to produce room shaking volume at 18 Hz.

Looks like something from the original Star Wars movie.. You know the scene with the Jawa transport vehicle and all the droids.. It looks like it could be one of the droids...

I really need to get myself to the AK Fest. It's practically in my back yard, maybe an hour's drive. Plus, the store where I bought my Era and Dynaudios is one of the exhibitors. Plus plus, I'd really like to hear a pair of Salks.

This year should be easier. In years past, I was working six days on steady midnights. That schedule didn't allow much of a social life. This year, we're not working ANY overtime and I only work days and afternoons. I should be able to get to the show. I'll bring my camera.

HOLY CARP, I just realized that this is tomorrow. I better get my butt in gear.

OK. I'm on my way. I dragged my bad old self out of bed before 9AM, which isn't easy for a night owl. I've got my camera, spare batteries and SD card. Threw on my AH T-shirt just in case any of you other fine folks will be there too. Now time for a Tim Horton's coffee, a stop at the currency exchange for some American cash and a visit with DHS at the border. Be back later.

While I'm sure those will sound absolutely spectacular, and Jim has done a magnificent job in his no holds barred speaker....

The HT4's are def. not my cup of tea in the looks dept either....

I would love to hear them some day though.... :)

OK, they actually look pretty good in that room shot with people in it. I was expecting something 6' tall towering over some cowering earthlings. Watched too much Lost in Space as a kid I guess.

Is this show a yearly event? I'm within driving range. It would be worth the drive to listen to some of these speakers.
