So this is my first time with home theater and i just go a yamaha RX-V663 and an Energy Take Classic 5.1 speaker set. The receiver can handle 7.1 and i happen to have two Realistic bookshelves from my previous CD listening set-up. The RX-V663 outputs about 95 watts per channel I believe and on the back of my Realistics it says "Input- 8 Ohms 40W (Max)" my initial thought is that these two bookshelves would not work b/c the reciever is giving it 55 more watts that its max and it would blow the speaker. Is this correct? or are these still fine to use. Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the forum!

Those speakers should be just fine. Most of the time, receivers are sending less than 1W to the main speakers, and there is even less sent to the surrounds. The louder you play it, the more power gets sent to the speakers. However, there isn't much material that gets played in the surrounds (most of the time). Generally, speakers are damaged by amplifiers that have too little power, not too much power. Sure, you could blow your speakers, but you'll need to be listening quite loudly to do that.

BTW, congrats on your new system!

thanks man. ok guys. one more question. those Realistics are going to be placed directly next to the TV (46" LCD Mitsubishi). I believe they are NOT magnetically shielded...could that pose to be a problem with the TV? i thought i heard somewhere it could cause interference or something. thanks again.

You don't have to worry about magnetic interference on an LCD flat panel. You are good to go.

BTW, which Realistic speakers do you have? I grew up with those, and I'm just curious. Thanks!

Cool, thanks. Those look familiar. I think that my oldest brother had a pair as surround speakers back in the 90's.
