UTVOLSFAN,

Congrats. I am thrilled for you! Don't forget to keep us posted with your insights of your new system. I look forward to it! The best part is you went under budget. Most people go over. Once again, congrats!

Yeah, what Adam said... connect speakers to amp, then connect amp to 663 pre-outs. then connect microphone

When you get your 663. read the entire manual carefully. Because it has a step by step instruction on how to use the microphone supplied with the 663

Btw, when I got my 663, I was too excited that I forgot to buy speaker wire and banana plugs and interconnects.. you might wanna begin that process before you get the 663. Because your def techs have subs built into them, I recommend a lower gauge speaker wire like 12 or 14... preferably 12. You can get 100 footer in a spool for an Andy Jackson or two. The 663 has pre-outs in the form of RCA so you get interconnects with RCAs on the ends.

Once you have all the ancillary items, you are so ready to go. The labor you put into it is fun.. I enjoy terminating my speaker wire.. in front of my fiance.. while she rolls her eyes saying "It's better than sex?" Oh yeah! ;)

I have already purchased the speaker wires and banana plugs. Now I need to get some good RCA cables to connect the amp to the 663. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again.

New gear review

:D:D:D:D I have gotten my gear connected. It is 3:00am and I'm beat. The Emotiva XPA-5 amp is to say the least an incedible piece of hardware. My Rotel would not even come close. I popped in some Norah Jones, set it for standard 2-channel stereo and WOW what a soundstage. It was truly magnificient. I then proceded to bring up The Patriot in Blu-ray DVD. The gunshots rang out and whizzed past my head with realism. The autocalibration did a great job as well.
I am still learning about the Yamaha though. For instance I have not been able to figure out how to connect my Sony digital wireless headphones. I love these headphones and I hope I can use them with this system. Also I can not get audio from my TV speakers. And all the soundfield settings. It will take me a while to really get to know this receiver. The days of the simply plug and play receivers are gone. I may try to take some pics and post if anyone is interested. Thanks again for your guys help.

Glad your enjoying.. The audio to the tv speakers has to do with your HDMI, run a set of analog if the avr doesnt pass audio over hdmi. Also while it can be overwhelming, I find todays AVRs more plug and play then older ones, especialy with the auto setup. Keeps us posted and post some pics..

I was in the same situation that UTVOLSFAN was in, but I have already bought a Yamaha 3800 for 1099 shipped. I bought that model mainly for the extra power, but it seems that I could have paid cheaper for the 663 and with an amp, it would sound better.

My question is...would it be wise of my to purchase and amp with my 3800? It sounds great now, but would it sound better with an amp?

Hi, Randy. A very common question, and one that I asked, too. :)

If you do some searching on the forum, you'll come across a lot of similar questions and a general consensus of comments. The answer is: maybe. It depends on how loud you listen to movies/music and how efficient your speakers are. I'd suggest doing a little searching here, and then if you still have questions, starting a new thread about this. If you do the new thread, be sure to include which speakers you are running.

My general philosophy, though - if it sounds great, then you don't need anything else. ;)

dbuys.com. It is brand new. It comes with the mfg warranty of 1 year but I purchased the extended warranty.
Do you still get the manufacturer warranty if dbuys.com isn't an authorized dealer?

Good question....dbuys says the manuacturers warranty still applies and they are an authorized internet dealer. However, if you look on the Yamaha site they do not have dbuys listed as an authorized internet dealer. A little more research may be necessary. Given the build quality of Yamaha hopefully I won't have any issues.

I was curious about that since I was considering buying one, especially at that price. Hopefully you will never have problems with yours so it won't really matter. Their no-return policy and not being on Yamaha's authorized dealer list have me a little worried though.
