My buddy recently decided to scrap his bose system which had an acousticmass9 and 5 small surround speakers since the acousticmass failed on him. He said the bose system sounded amazing to him, I told him that he will get a lot more for his money by getting something other than bose plus you will not be stuck in buying bose only in the future if something fails.

So I am helping him put together a new system so looking for some help on a receiver
He will be using his PS3 for movies ect.
he will need it for a 5.1 speaker system which he has to buy as well.
he would also like to power two speakers for his outside patio area in the future as well.
His budget is $250 - $300 for the receiver.

Thanks for your help.

A lot of these guys will know this stuff right off the top of their head, but maybe try something like Nextag for researching?

Just type in AV Receiver and they have different specifications listed as a filter on the left hand side of the page that may be useful and helps you narrow down what you're looking for.

Personally I think it will be hard to find an AVR that can do multi-zone for that kind of money.

You might find something like old stock on eBay though. On Nextag, I saw a couple of Denon AVR-1611CI units for under $300 but I wasn't sure of the vendors.

**Update** Actually Amazon Marketplace has one for $265 - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003IPC5FM/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=A1J7WSBJHTGUFA

That Budget is too low, especially if you need zone 2.

I would avoid the low end and go to the mid price of any line.

This will likely be a reliable performer. I think you need to steer him to gear with a lower chance of going wrong. I think we have had enough issues with Onkyo, especially customer service, that I would avoid them.

Street price seems to be about $450 which is about as low as you want to pay. There are no pre outs, so if he would ever want to use an external amp, then you need to bump up a bit.

What is the speaker and sub budget?

Yamaha RX-V667 would be preferable to the RX-V671 imo (the 667 has preouts, 671 loses them in favor of other features), but if you need the features of the 671 and the preouts then get the RX-V867 :D

RX-V671: $550 http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-RX-V671BL-AV-Receiver-Black/dp/B004QR56SE/
RX-V667: $369 http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-RX-V667-7-2-Channel-Theater-Receiver/dp/B003P2V52M/
RX-V867: $430 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882115284

That is an excellent price on both the 667 and 867 (especially the 867), but the 867 price is after a $100 coupon which expires the 29th...so I'd advise your friend to move quickly :)
