New receiver around $400

Looking for a new receiver that has the following
1) some kind of airplay so I can play music from Iphone without a physical hook up
2) 5.1 pre-outs

Would like to stick to Marantz or Yamaha but will consider others.

Not likely to find an AVR with pre-outs for under $1000.
The irony of it all, is the lower priced AVRs which have lower rated power and would certainly benefit from adding a power amp don't have the pre-outs...one way of keeping the price low.

This Onkyo does have pre-outs and you could add Apple Airport Express for Airplay

Thanks for the replies, I recently picked up the Yamaha RX-V573 but thinking about returning it because it does not have the pre-outs.
The reason for the pre-outs is because I also recently picked up the DCX-2496, which for now will only be used for my sub which is being powered with the behringer ep2500.

I am currently still finishing up the sub since I built the enclosure but I know once that is complete I will be looking for another audio related project to begin.
So I was thinking a possibility would be to later remove the passive cross overs in my current speakers and use the DCX as an active cross over.
I would like to have the option later on to use the pre-outs in this kind of setup.

I also have a Marantz sr4001 which has 7.1 channel inputs which I was thinking I could feed using the DCX-2496.

I am just looking for something to feed the DCX2496, are there any 5.1 pre-amps that I could use in this price range?

Hmmmm... Unless I'm mistaken - you don't have to use DCX x-over the speakers, you could just use it to EQ the sub in this case you only need to use regular sub pre-out port which is on every single AVR with bass management

I'm afraid I don't know of any good receivers that have all the features you want for your desired $400 price tag.

For brand new models, the Marantz SR5007 would likely be the best choice, but its price is up around $850.

Accessories4less doesn't have any SR5007 refurbished units yet because it's such a new model.

And BoredSys already pointed out the other two best options out there. The Onkyo TX-NR709 at $450 from A4L is, by a fair margin, the least expensive receiver that includes a full set of pre-outs. It doesn't have AirPlay, but you could add a dock or an AppleTV, and the combined price would still be well less than either the new SR5007 or the A4L refurbished SR6006.

I'm certainly a fan of always having pre-outs available should I ever have a need or desire for them. Just isn't really possible to get them AND AirPlay for $400. Afraid you'll either need to increase your budget or look for a used unit from a private sale

It is $500 but has free ship. You do get 7.1 pre-outs of course, but UMC1 have[had ?? ] many firmware issues - just ask Majorlooser how many times he flashed new firmware to his umc1...

If you want to save money on the receiver you could be a speaker level to line level converter (not the best sound quality, but you could still do your project with the crossover) and save money on the receiver. That should tide you over until you can afford a pre/pro or receiver with pre-outs.

I do think you would be hard pressed to find that exact avr w/ what you want.I got my Yamaha RX-V665 about 4yrs ago and not even knowing it did have pre/outs which became a huge issue. Also at 90wts. per chl it could theorectically push most common boxed speakers. W/ that said my avr did clip when pushed and wasn't quite up to the task .When I finally took it out of an enclosed rack,let it breathe and dialed it in it came to life.I also now push it as a pre/pro w/ my Adcom gfa555 doing the heavy lifting.now both my 2- chl and h/t systems are shared until I get another stand alone pre. What is missing is 3-d ready and ether net connectivity. I run i-net radio from my computer to audio1 of the Yamaha have a dock w/ pod and do use the zn 2 feature to power a pair of JBL -2060 bookies in my bdrm.So at $445 from the now closed 6th ave electronics it wasn't
