New Onkyo 805 a bad apple

With the death of hddvd it will probably be some time before I need to be concerned about the lossless hd formats. Is there a steal out there now that gets 5 *'s for multichannel performance and has great SQ and some of hdmi functions? Video processing is secondary bu if it can sync the vis and audio?
I've already provided some specific recommendations but you should note that the video processing could be very important. Most TV's have very run-of-the-mill scalers. If I run my DirecTV receiver directly to the 1080p TV, the SD images look splotchy. I usually refer to the way it looks as "paint-by-number." My Onkly 605 produced the same results - another run-of-the-mill scaler. With the Pioneer 92 doing the scaling I get photographic SD that is as good as I would achieve with an SD TV set. Since you are likely to watch a lot of SD on your HDTV, you may really appreciate good video processing.

The out-of-synch audio may not be the fault of the receiver. It could be the input source producing it. To find out, connect the source to the TV as a comparison.

Ditto on the source input as far as lip sync. You could try a calibration disc if you wanted to get a reference setting, but different channels, dvd's, etc will offer different sync. I know, its totally stupid.

I also just got a refurbed Onkyo 805. Only using it as a pre/pro. Only issue I have run into so far is popping when skipping a track. I didn't notice it until later as I usually just watch beginning to end, but I was trying to see about audio setup and was skipping to more audio-laden tracks... its pretty annoying, but OTOH its a lot of machine for $600.

Anyone know if popping may damage my speakers? or is it harmless, albeit annoying, thing...
