Excellent. I was thinking I had to wait for 2 or 3 more months. Hopefully, they are all HDMI 2.1 ready this year.

Really, anything out now is surely the 2018 models. 2019 models won't likely be announced until April or so next year I would have thought. Most if not all the 2018s are available to buy now.

HDMI 2.1 is a late 2019 thing I believe. However, even then, who knows what extra stuff may be needed in 8k as far as HDCP versions and new HDR versions coming etc. YMMV.

Not really concerned with 8k but if I am going to purchase a new Receiver in the next few months I thought it would be prudent to wait for 2019 models. I was under the assumption that 2019 models would be HDMI 2.1 ready, even a few high-end receivers had it in 2018. I was disappointed when Marantz decided not to give the option to upgrade the SR-8012 to HDMI 2.1. I think HDR10 plus needs HDMI 2.1 to function correctly and 4k @ 120hz. It just provides so much more bandwidth. Seems like I would be buying into obsolescence if I did not have it.

So depending on the specs of Samsung brand new HDR10 +, need to research, and output of 4K at 120hz, need to research also, you may exceed the capabilities of hdmi 2.0a and 2.0b. Also 8k will likely come out eventually and sure HDCP will probably come out with an update too for 8k etc. no such thing as future proof. So really the way to go is match TV and Receiver specs at the same time. At least that is what I did. I have hdmi 2.0a on all my gear including my tv from 2016.

My current TV is eventually going into the family room. Not sure what I will replace it with projection or flat screen, this is at least a year out. I added four ceiling speakers for Atmos and need to upgrade my receiver soon if I want to take advantage of it but don't want to be stuck with a receiver that doesn't provide what my TV might be capable of. Just trying to future proof a bit. I know HDMI 2.1 seems moot right now but will it still seem that way 2 or 3 years from now when I am using a relatively new receiver that is stuck with HDMI 2.0? Maybe I am over thinking this. Any thoughts?

Bleeding edge basically. There will also likely be updates to Atmos etc that happen in the AVR only.

So what a few people here do is buy separate amps for the front 3 or more, then buy the latest Denon 4000 series or 3000 series on close out every few years. It’s not a perfect plan because Denon doesn’t certify hdmi. LOL

Well if you are on a budget and you want the latest technology that actually makes sense. If I wasn't upgrading the TV next year this would be a non-issue.

I put my plasma in the living room too. So the first domino ideally is buying the new tv. If you want hdr10 or Dolby vision no prob. Hdr10+ will maybe require a 2020 AVR if what you are saying is true about hdmi 2.1 being required (I am not sure).

Whenever I upgrade I move the old stuff from the theater to the livingroom. It's like getting 2 upgrades! Future proofing is not really possible if you want to always have the latest thing. With that said I just upgraded a receiver for the first time since 2009. Sure I didnt have atmos, or 3d, or 4k, but I was fine with it and didnt feel like I was missing out much. As long as you don't need to be the first guy on the block to try everything that comes out, this stuff can last you many years.
