Strongly support the suggestion to get away from ceiling speakers for your bed layer. I don't see atmos doing a whole lot for you with all ceiling speakers.

Im thinking of going with the 5.1.4 setup.

If the suggestion is to move s1 and s2 to behind the couch, would it be better to move the couch to just near the wall and still mount those on the wall? And just adjust the 4 atmos ceiling speakers back?

Is Denon the most recommended receiver brand?
Man I hate to be that guy that shoots down all your ideas but you should never have your couch up against the back wall even with 5 channel bed layers

Plus it completely defeats the use of your in ceilings because you've moved your position way outside there axis

And no you don't want to move your in ceiling speak ers back there to compensate

That would just create even more of a mess

Also then you've moved your listening position about 20 ft back from that tv and that's an issue and also weeeelll getting your speakers to give you good spl imaging and soundstage from that distance is going to be a challenge plus your definetly have to invest in some amps from that far way if your speak ers could handle that amount of power and you really want to have to listen that loud

If you don't mind me asking what is your aversion to putting the surrounds where we recommended it should be easy to conceal wires and bookshelves on stands can look nice

And if not that just buy 2 more towers for your 5 layer base like 5 RP 8000f's which is the dream anyway 5 identical or 7 identical speak ers on your base layer it's just not realistic for most of us Klipsch is having a 25% off sale right now JBl studio 5 series is back on sale so you get plenty of money saving options right now

Do you have family that would object to the aesthetic?

You don't have the type of room to go in wall on the side surrounds so your going to have to compromise on this if you want great surround sound you can go in wall on the rears if you go 7 channel to keep the area clean but you need to use stands and bookshelves or towers on your side surrounds if your going to pull this off

It's just science that's how these formats work there s just no getting around it believe me I'd have loved to cheat on some of my setups if I couldve

There are plenty of excellent recievers the denon x4500 H is a great option although you'd need at least a 2 channel amp to utilize 11 channels you'd have to go up the line to get one that has its own amps for all channels which will cost you more but will be less complex

I have two par of jbl HP-520's in my setup now Danish made European market 4 ways and use s-38's for the front heights and an jbl s-2 center 4 way ,. the towers have an weird set up inside for the bass two 8inch bolted together face to face vented out the top they sound very good but there's always something new . I had a crossover switch go bad on one and contacted them they sent me a whole new crossover for free and these are over 20 years old . also use s-26's two ways for the rear surrounds . I got a set of jbl l-810's to put up for the rear presence but haven't run the cable yet . I use two carver TFM- 35 THX amps for the front mains and rear side surrounds and a carver TFM - 25 for the center channel . I had these amps serviced by the carver service center not cheap but like new when done . I've not got to hear the new jbl 590' yet but ive herd and read good things . I use the internal amps in the Yamaha rx-a 3020 to power the rear back surround and the front presence . iam really wanting to upgrade my two subs They are psw - 1200's that do a decent job but me and the receiver haven't come to an understanding on how they should sound by fare the hardest thing to get sounding right at least to me . The whole setup is open airy very detailed soundstage when fired up .
I used to use S-38II’s as surrounds and I was always impressed with their imaging prowess. Still use and S-centerII, and S-312II as mains. I’ve found them to make for a very good system. I was very interested in moving to the 590’s. I’ve heard that the 312’s are very very similar, so then I started looking at the new HDI series that’s replacing the studio 5 series. Not sure what I’ll do now with the world how it is.....
Anyway, I like my JBL’s.

I use them for the front height or presence up about 7 and a half ft up on big shelves and separated about 16 ft apart and ive got to say even running them alone they always impress . That being said ive got a 5.1 set up in our garage 24 by 36 wide and ill tell ya what the s-38's is all I use on every channel . I highly recommend them for surrounds to anyone . There a well thought out speaker with good components . A friends has the 312's in his system with s-38's for his surrounds and a sc-1 center it sounds really good . I use the S- center 2 I like it a lot it mates well with the jbl setup I have now . There's tons of them on ebay right now relatively cheap but ya got watch what ya buy .

Sorry guys, been a busy day.

I am trying to setup my living room as clutter free as possible, to make my wife happy, to prevent issues with my kids, and to make sure the floor vaccuum robot I get can do its job.

Is there a wireless option?

And am I understanding it correctly on the speakers behind the couch. They can be setup with the side speaker channel and not the back surround channel? That side channel is better to have for the audio than the back surround?

SO, in dropping from 7.1.4 to 5.1.4, the two to drop are the back surround?

Thanks. :)

Yes the two you would drop in 5.1.4 are the 2 rears

Yeah I figured that was the issue maybe some of the fellas might have some wireless options for you in my pictures on my old house I ran all my wiring underneath the rug and couches and up through the speaker stands it was clean you couldn't even see it really

Best of luck to you on this one!

Couple things.
Usually you want to avoid wireless as they can pick up interference, suffer from dropouts and you’ll still need cables of some kind since there are no battery powered options. That’s a tough one.
And yes, for 5.x.x no matter if you place the surround speakers next to the couch, or all the way against the back wall, you will connect them to the “surround” terminals. NOT the “rear surround” terminals. Those RS channels are only used in 7.xx.
I understand WAF can be difficult, and it’s not always practical to have a theater in a shared space. Some wives do better with this, and some don’t. In my house we talk it out and try to balance each other out. She would tell you I win though. Lol.

So it just hit me. You already have the IC in place right? That makes one thing easier but you should be aware. Being in the exact center is probably going to be a vacuum for bass. It’s not exactly in the center considering the whole width of the space, but it definitely is from front to back. Might get lucky though.
For the surrounds. That’s tough. 5ch soundtracks are made with the idea that the surround speakers will be at 90-110°(to the sides and back a little). So when you place those speakers way in the back, sounds don’t pan correctly and you might find that distracting. However, if that’s your ONLY choice, then that’s your only choice. As a self admitted noob, your expectations/experience are lower so it might work for you. For awhile at least. Personally I would try to push for surrounds in the right place. You could place them right at the rear couch corners but know that they would be technically too close, and possibly annoying more than enveloping. Ideally you’d want them more like 5’ish off the couch ends. Probably be in the way... guess I’m just thinking out loud. Trying to find you a solution.
More coffee......

Yeah I will have to think of something for the speakers behind the couch. The wife will not go for the wires lol.
I have some time. We are not moving for a couple of weeks.

What's everyones best pick for AV receiver for this 5.1.4 configuration?

Hey guys.

How about the Denon avr-x4500h receiver for this setup, with the speakers suggested?

How is this receiver?

Do I need to use an amplifier with this?

And I have seen in some setups a cooling unit for the receiver, is that needed when the receiver is not placed in an enclosed cabinet?

Noob.

Another thing. What about the upward firing klipsch atmos speakers if I choose not to ceiling mount them?
