Do you know of any proper measurements of that subwoofer? I was looking at some of the reviews on Amazon, and some of the claims are quite extravagant.
I no longer need a link to a review, as its phillip has provided one, and here it is:

That is not a subwoofer I would want, but on the other hand, I don't know of any that I would want at that price.

I would shell out the extra money, for a Rythmik FV12 for $499 with FLAT frequency response, respectable output, and servo distortion control.

Although I would prefer to see an independent source of testing, that looks like a much, much better frequency response. I agree with you; I think I would save my money until I could afford the Rythmik FV12 or something better, instead of getting that BIC. But I can understand people not wanting to do that, for various possible reasons.

Of course, it is significantly more expensive than the BIC, and so it ought to be significantly better.

Or I would do what I have actually done, and keep my eye out for used subwoofers. I have picked up 3 used SVS subwoofers over the years, all in mint or near mint condition, all for less than half retail price. Interestingly, one cannot generally find that much off the bottom of the line units, which makes them a less good deal on the used market than higher models. My "cheap" SVS is a Plus model; I plan on passing it on to my brother when he visits, and I expect he will be very happy with it.

Anyway, the Rythmik FV12 is too much to keep the recommendation within budget, and so I personally would just forgo a subwoofer until there was more money for it. I have owned a cheap subwoofer long ago, and although it added some thump, it was not a good value, as it was not satisfying in the long run. Things that one buys, only to replace, are usually very bad values and cause one to spend more money in the long run than if one had just saved up for something decent in the first place.

The cheapest decent sub you can get, is more than people expect to spend on SIX speakers (5 + sub)

Maybe the OP has some woodworking abilities? The CSS Trio 12:

In a 5 cu ft, 17.5hz tuned vented sub with 500w amp, will work extremely well. and could be cheaper than the BIC overall.

Yes. I can understand not having much money for audio gear, as I was in that situation for many years. That is why I had a 2 channel only system for so very long, as I could afford a pair of good bookshelf speakers and a receiver and source, but no more. I early on decided that I was better off forgoing deep bass altogether than to buy a more full range speaker that was otherwise inferior to the bookshelf speakers I could get. If all of my gear was lost and if I only had $1000 to spend, I would again forgo deep bass and get the rest of the sound good and live that way forever if necessary. I would miss my 2 SVS CS-Ultra subwoofers, but they are not the most important part of the sound (as one can easily determine by unhooking the main speakers and only running one's subwoofer, which will be pretty worthless on its own). One great advantage to this approach is that it naturally allows for a convenient and efficient upgrade path, as one can add a subwoofer without selling off (at a loss) any of one's already purchased gear.

Of course, other people have different priorities, and they may, and should, select according to their personal preferences. Though they should think carefully about what those preferences really are, as it can be costly to be mistaken about this. And people on a tight budget are the ones who are most hurt by such mistakes.

Making one's own subwoofer is a good suggestion for those with woodworking abilities. Unfortunately, however, that is not most people. But it is good to include the suggestion in such threads just in case the person asking for advice is one of those people.

You emphasized the wrong words. The right ones to emphasize are "if necessary." The bookshelf speakers I had (and still have, though they are no longer my main speakers) produce better sound than most people ever have in their homes. I could live with it again, if necessary.
