Hows it going? I'm Matt, 24 from NC. Just purchased my first home and looking into a home audio setup for movies and some music.

My room is shaped really wierd so front seperates are kind of out of the question. Doing some research and talking to a few local shops, Ive narrowed my options down.

Here is what I'm considering... please tell me what you think and why or why not, suggestions for other ideas fully welcome.

Reciever : Pioneer Elite VSX-23TXH (or the 21.. is the 23 worth the extra?)
Front : Mirage Uni-theatre LCR soundbar (my room just wont allow seperates)
Surrounds : Mirage omnicans 6.5" enclosed in ceilings (or similar brand)
Sub : Something small like the Mirage MM-8 on Earthquake MiniMe... need the compact box

Thoughts? Suggestions? Critique away please! I'm a complete noob to home audio so the more the better.

I'm gonna be honest.

Sounds like you might be better off just going to the movies.

I wouldn't suggest all those compromises. I've never seen a room that couldn't take a pair of speakers. You can use our newb post pad and then put some pictures up to give us some ideas, but at this point I feel your money would be a waste.

To be honest, that setup doesn't sound bad given your constraints. One thing I might change is to go from the Mirage sub to a Outlaw Audio ECS-10. It's not quite as small, but it is still a very small sub, and I think it would really outperform the 8" subs you are talking about while still costing roughly as much. I did see a good price on the mirage sub at audio liquidators, but they kind of have a questionable reputation, and I think hard about doing business with them, at least do some google searches for stories about them.

heres some pix.

im not moving the TV as it was a big pita to mount on 24" studs, not to mention my sectional is too big to put anywhere else. so whatever i do, its going to have to work as is.

Welcome to the forum!

I recently purchased the VSX-23. It's a nice unit, but I think that you can save some money given your constraints. Some nice things about the VSX-23 are the decoding of the newer lossless codecs (e.g. Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD MA), pre-amp outputs for external amplifiers, and 12V triggers for external amplifiers. With a front soundbar and in-ceiling surround speakers, I doubt that you'd be able to tell much (if any) difference between the new lossless codecs (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA) and the lossy codecs (Dolby Digital and DTS), and you likely will have no need for external amplification.

If you like Pioneer and want audio processing over HDMI (including decoding of the lossless codecs), but don't need external amplifiers or some of the extra frill of the Pioneer Elite line, you might want to consider the VSX-1019 or even the VSX-919.
