I need some advice as to the differences between some Denon DVD/CD players. I have been looking at getting a new player and have spotted a used 2900 for sale at $350 which seems like an ok deal. My question is in regards to the differences between this model and the newer ones eg. 2910, 2920 and 2930. Are the different model numbers reflective of the model yr (like Samsung does with the letter in their model number) or do they represent upgrades in technology and the processor chips? If there are indeed upgrades do they merit the extra expense of the newer models or are they incremental? I am using it with a Samsung 50" DLP that is 4yrs old (HLM series) and is 1080i/720P res, I do not plan on replacing this for a while. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

Barry

Main difference are the ability to upscale as well as HDMI output. The 29xx is technically a model down from the 2900, being a successor to the 2200 in reality (not that that is a bad thing). You would want to look at the 39xx as successors to the 2900. Yes, those model numbers came out in successive generations, adding various features to each one.

$350 sounds about right for the 2900 these days, if it has original box, manual and remote. It is an excellent player both audio and video wise, however there are newer upscaling players that can be had for less that are as good or better (www.oppodigital.com ). Another thing to consider at your price point would be either an HD-DVD or Blu-ray player since they can all upscale your standard DVDs too.

What exactly is the priority? Picture quality? Sound quality? Balance of both?

more info

Thanks for the quick reply. In response to your question I want to use it to play audio CD's as well as movies, so I need a player that is good for audio and video. I was out at a store last night and looked at a 39xxCI for $1400. While I am not adverse to spending that I wonder if I will see/hear a difference with my system. I am running a Perreaux 2150B block for my mains (Infinity Reference 6), Yamaha RX-V757 for the other speakers: Energy sub, B&W bookshelves for rears and a Sinclair Audio BC26 centre. The Oppo seems like a great choice value wise but what is its audio performance like? Is that strong also? On another note when I get a new player should I hook it into my receiver with the dig co-ax/optical feed or use the players decoders and run seperate lines for all the channels?

Thanks
