Ok. I understand that the new upconverting dvd players enhance picture quality of older dvd's on new plasmas. I have an older tuner/receiver, are these newer players compatible with older units? TV has 2 hdmi connections. any advice thanks

any inprovment in picture quality will be seen on any HDTV, not just plasmas.
but as far as sound goes, an old reciever will work fine.

Newer DVD players have the same audio outputs of older DVD players - optical and/or coaxial digital, stereo left/right, and some have built-in DD/DTS decoding and therefore also have 5.1 analog outs.

If your receiver is really old, it will only have Dolby Pro Logic and won't have Dolby Digital or DTS decoding. If that's the case, it's definitely in your best interests to upgrade your receiver. You can get a perfectly decent receiver for $150 - $200.

Yes, they are compatible. The HDMI cable from the DVD needs to go direct to the TV as it has 2 such inputs and audio to the receiver.
Now, the kind of audio you will get depends on your old receiver. Dolby prologic or Dolby Digital; plug that analog or digital into the receivers.
