Hi All,

I've recently run accross a free AMP/Subwoofer combo for my '99 Buick Regal. Unfortunately, I need to get a new CD deck (no pre-outs on stock head unit). I'm looking to spend about $150 on it. I'm not looking for audiofile performance (still using stock speakers for now), and my rear 6x9's are 2 Ohm's :( not sure why...stupid GM.

Anyway, I really don't need many bells and wistles, I won't be using MP3's and don't have satellite radio, I just want quality CD playback at a reasonable price.

This is more of a home audio/video website so I am not certain you will get many responses.

I know that!! But I trust the peeps here, and figured someone has to have some experience with car decks too. Trust me, I'll look elsewhere as well, but thanks for all your help.

I've got an old deck Ill sell you. I installed in my GF's car and she totaled it about 3 weeks later and its been sitting in the garage since. It probably has a lot more features that you dont want, but the price will be right.

I'm no car audio nut but I just replaced the stock head unit in my '04 Hyundai Elantra with a Sony GT-300 and never looked back. It cost about $120 plus $40 installation.

I did it less for sound but moreso to have an 1/8" stereo mini jack on the front so I could play my Sansa in the car. But, ultimately, it sounds a heckuva lot better than the stock unit.

It sounds great with the stock speakers. I had planned to upgrade them as well but after hearing them with is unit, there was no need.

Dunno how it works with 2 ohms though. Give Crutchfield a call or stop by Circuit City, where I had mine installed.

your rear speakers are 2 ohm as they are probably stock speakers given with the car. Manufacturers do that so that you can run only the provided stock head unit with the speakers as they are designed for each other.

The question is whether you would be driving your speakers with an amp or the new head unit you purchase?
The new head unit internal amp would not handle a 2ohm load.

A power amp would probably support a 2 ohm speaker . It would be doing double the power so make sure your stock speakers are not too low powered and can handle it.

I would suggest if you are want good sound change the stock speakers as most are of poor quality. If your adding a sub and an amp it would they would not be able to keep up and you would get an unbalanced sound stage.

If you want a top of the line head unit for your car look into eclipse. I don't know how much you want to spend but they make amazing units.

Most "off the shelf" head units are only 4 ohm compatible. If you connect one of these to the stock speakers you will have to be careful not to run it at high volume since it will blow the fuse. You might want to replace the 6x9's first and then the head unit.

Craigslist is your friend... you can get decent replacement speakers and head unit in the budget. Say, 100 - 120 for the head unit and 30 - 50 for the speakers.

Are you certain that the free amp you're getting doesn't have high level inputs, then you could just split the speaker wire signal from the rear 6x9's into the amp.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you all, but I've had a lot going on this weekend.

The amp does not have high level inputs, only RCA (line levels). I do have a converter(that i didn't know my friend had given me), which I assume would do the same thing as if the amp had high levels inputs?

I had assumed before that I would have to replace the head unit, but it doesn't seem to be the case if I can split the wire. Will this affect sound quality from the sub and/or rear 6x9's? It would be preferable if I don't have to replace it (and much cheaper).

I would suggest a Alpine deck, if you decide to change the head unit. Even there lower priced units are quite good. I have had 3 Alpines and never had a issue. My wife has had a sony break, I had 2 high end Kenwood Excelon units that took a dump, so I will only buy Alpine now. Current one I have was less than 200 bucks, and has a aux input, satellite, and 3 rca's for front, rear and sub. Sound quality is good as well

Believe me, you really really do want to replace the stock deck. It's really a bed performer in a lot of ways. I couldn't believe the difference when I replaced the HU in my 2000 GMC truck without changing the speakers. I did later on, but I did it in steps. HU, then the front speakers, then the rears.

Changing the HU was by far the best bang for the buck. The HUs in GM vehickes around that period sounded very bad. There used to be a site where they did a test report on several OEM head units and the GM ones came in dead last. I think the one in my truck put out 1.5 watts per channel @10% distortion, it was that bad. It wasn't just distortion, the FM was weak, and it had problems with any CDs that had the slightest nick on them. Ones that refused to play at all in the stock unit played fine in any aftermarket HU I tried.

I put a Sony HU in that truck and it is in a friend's car now, and doing fine. My present truck had a JVC high end HU, but it had issues, so I replaced it with a mid range Panasonic. No, it doesn't sound quite as good, but it works fine and costs about 40% what the JRC did. I have a friend working at one of the local car stereo stores and he says that Panasonics just don't come back, they seem to have no problems, unlike some of the other brands that are much more expensive. I have 2 Panasonic cassette decks at home that are old timers that just keep going. The newer of the two is almost 28 years old, and the older one is 36!

If your stock deck sounds ok, you can use one of these and tap into the wires for the rear speakers.
