New 5.1 Speakers; What to Buy?

Ok so I've decided pretty much what I want, one of the new 6 Series Samsung LCD's, running off a HTPC, and a Yamaha RX-V663 Amp, since it's HDMI 1.3a compatible and seems to be pretty good value for all the features it's packing.

Now comes the key questions; what to pair it all with ?

I visited a local store I've found to be very knowledgable – Hitek AV in Northcote if anyone knows it – and they basically said that my best bet is to go with one of their pre-made 5.1 setups, rather than trying to mix and match because that will cost a bit more.

The setups I would pick from are as follows;

Mordaunt-Short AVANT 900i Series:

1 x Avant 309i Sub
1 x Avant 905i Centre
2 x Avant 903i Rears
2 x Avant 908i Fronts

On Sale: $2499 (Was listed at $3400)

Whatmough Magnum 2 Series:

1 x Tornado 2 Sub
1 x M205 Centre
2 x M210 Rears
2 x M230 Fronts

Selling: $3250

They 'do' have some systems for $1500 area but I thought it would be silly to pick up those given I already have;

1 x Mordaunt-Short Genie 409 Sub and 2 x Fronts, that I got rebuilt from the older wooden casing that had some speakers from the 70's in them, those were done for around $800 for the pair.

What do people think are going to be my best options for sound quality ?

And yes, i will listen to the pre-built systems before making a final decision, but I won't get a full-range of sound in-store, and I also like to gather as much information as I can before buying, never know what faults there are!

Thanks in advance for any help people can provide!

Cheers

I have never heard or read that Mordaunt-Short produces a good sub, and I have never seen them recommended on any of the audio forums.

That being said, I'm sure your going to get lots of advise to kick the Mordaunt-Short sub, and to take a look at SVS, HSU, AV123 and a few others.

Mordaunt makes great sounding speakers even though they don't get listed under alot of forums. They have been reviewed by Audio Mags and are well respected in the audio circles. Are they the right speaker for you? Only you can answer that thru careful auditioning and comparisons to other speakers. Audition as many different speakers as possible.

Im a huge PSB fan and love the sound of PSB's Image series speakers.

The Morduant short speakers that I have heard sound great. Granted it was their top of the line speaker but it sounded good. I would not recommend any of their subs. SVS and HSU make great subs and are highly recommended on these forums.
