Network Card - possibly on it's last legs?

My audio system in the spare BR/Den scared the crap out of me. I was in the Network function switching around and the Denon AVR-3312 ci being used as a pre-amp made a poping sound and the protection circuitry enacted. The 7 channel Outlaw amp's opto protection thus tripped causing a bodacious thump. The pre- amp has 2 each Microprocessors, the amp has opto protection, no fuses. I had to remove all power to both units and it thus reset. I hope this was just a glitch and not my pre-amp network card beginning to fail! Please lend advice with experiences etc..

I can't really offer advice based upon your description.

However, I will mention that my Bro in Law has the 3311 or 3312 and his network card died within 6 months of his new purchase. He was able to take it to a local repair authorized repair center to have it repaired under warranty. As far as I know, he hasn't had any problems since then, but I'm not sure if he uses that feature much any more.

I think his just stopped working, no faults tripped or anything.

Thanks, mine is still working. But, if that pop happens again, I'll get rid of the AVR-3312ci. It's out of warranty!

Seriously, I have no life.

What service were you using- internet radio, Pandora, Sirius...?

I have never heard a network card cause noise in an audio system, but I have heard the VTuner problems that used to occur- not sure if it was the AVRs or VTuner itself, but it seemed to be related to the servers being overloaded and that caused interruptions in service. The AVRs I heard about that had this problem had main board issues and the network card is on that board.

I can't see how a failure of the Network card would cause the Outlaw power amps to go into protection. To me it sounds much more likely this was some sort of problem on the power grid to your home.

It is for these type of issues, I use whole house surge protection and drive anything with microprocessors or fragile ICs from UPS devices, with rapid response.

Thanks, I hope that was it. I have it on a surge protector. I live in Sherman, Tx and we do experience wild weather. I did not hear or see anything else in the house act up when it occurred, however.

PS, I have the Service Manuals for the Denon AVR3312ci as well as the Deno AVR4520ci. The 3312ci has an on board SMPS. The 4520ci has HDAM circuitry- which I thought was exclusive to Marantz.
