netflix and surround issue

oops I meant Alias is not available.... but still though. If whatever movie is listed as 5.1 and it is indeed selected.... it should reproduce it lol.
The key is when you press the "Select" button on the remote during a video that it says it's in 5.1. If it doesn't say that, then it's not your setup causing the problem - it's that the video isn't actually in 5.1.

I've checked new releases that show 5.1 and still nothing.... I don't know what's wrong but I have a feeling that something is fckery.

my ps3 is hooked up wireless... would that have something to do with it you think?

You might have something there. I don't think that wireless inherently presents an issue, but your overall internet speed might. You said that Tintin displayed "video: low/SD audio English/stereo (primary)." Was that video listed as being in HD for you? If so, was it always "low/SD?" It might be that Netflix is defaulting to the stereo audio feed, just like it will show a lower video quality, because your download speeds are too low to get HD video and 5.1 audio. Just a thought.

hmm yes actually... it's listed as HD but it is not. However, my internet connection is listed as 100% strength. Maybe I'll try hooking up a network cable to it and see what happens.

My Sony 380, 590, PS3 slim all do 5.1DD+ on Netflix Canada. My Oppo 95 is the only one that would do stereo only. I am watching Hellboy II right now in DD plus, and all channels are actually making sound.

So I think it has to be the settings on your slim, AVR, or something to do with the cable but then you said it plays BR fine so that is not so likely. May be do a microprocessor reset on your AVR and the PS3.

What is your internet speed? Your wireless can be at 100% strength, but that isn't an indication of the speed.

Btw, the PS3 uses 802.11g, which is probably going to give you about 15 Mbps max in your house. That should be plenty for Netflix, though.

Um I'm not sure but I am using rogers high speed cable connection. That's what it's called anyway.

You should run an internet speed test on your computer to check it out, then let us know the results. Speedtest.net works in the U.S., but I don't know about Canada.

Actually, that's what I used and I got 22.05MBPS and 0.22 upload speed.

Then, yeah - try the network cable to see if that fixes it. Your internet download speeds are good. It's possible that your wireless is limiting the speed to your PS3.

Ohhhhhhhh I just unplugged my network cable from my computer for wireless connectivity and the download speed is now 4.62 mbps

Damnit... it didn't fix the problem.

PS3 has a few screens of settings you have to go through, so it may be easier to do a factory reset first and go from there. As for the AVR, you can just do a microprocessor reset to factory default as well. I know that's a lot of work but it seems that you have try everything else already. Roger high speed should be better than 4 to 5 mbps unless you have a very basic package. Having said that, even 4 mbps should be enough to get 5.1DD+ on Netflix. By the way I did experience the same problem with Netflix a while back but I cannot recall what was messed up at the time.

Thanks I'll try that. With the network cable, I get 20.05 mbps so huge difference between wireless and wired.

Were you saying that your computer gets 4.62 Mbps when it's on your wireless network? If so, which wireless transmitter do you have?

There are fairly inexpensive 802.11n wifi access points that you could connect to your PS3 to improve speeds, but only if your wifi transmitter can handle them.

I'm using a cisco lynksys router

I just reset the PS3 to default settings and still nothing. I'm scared to reset the AVR as I have it all set up to work with everything BUT the ps3... i've played around with the input which the PS3 is plugged into. Other than that, nothing else should be affecting this issue - I wouldn't think.

Do you know what protocol it's using (e.g. 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n)?

Btw, does anybody else ping "trahnet.ru" under "Trackback" when they reply in this thread? I don't get that on other threads that I've tried. I might punch out of this thread.

i'm not sure about the protocol.

I see trahnet.ru when I am typing a reply... not sure what that is.

Have you logged on to your Netflix account and set quality to best just to be sure. I don't think it matters but worth a try, nothing to lose.

Other than that you may also try to reinitiate Netflix in case there is a bug that disable 5.1. I can't remember how to do it off hand but you should be able to get it to the point when you have to sign up again inputting your username and passworld, or even re-install the Netflix sofware. May be you can just call Netflix and ask them to get you to that point.
