I would like to add this.

The amp did not change the sound at low levels.

BUT, when you crank this mother up, it is amazingly better. MUCH, MUCH better. Without the amp, as the volume increased, it lost authority. I don't care if it is Yamaha, Denon, H/K, or any other receiver. BRAND is NOT the bloody point. The point is, no receiver has the b@lls of any top quality amp, PERIOD!

So the sound did change then, you just noticed it more at louder levels. It sounds better at louder levels, which is one of the things a better amp design is all about. The ability not loose control of the speaker as the amp is pushed. I will also bet that if now go back and listen to the yammy at moderate and low levels you will hear some differences there now too. Give it a try and see what you hear. Hmmm " see what you hear" that just does not make sense somehow

Zumbo, I would not make a blanket statement like that either though, take a look at this. http://www.rotel.com/products/specs/rsx1067.htm

I can guarantee this thing is not lacking on balls

But, you could just add a Rotel amp to current receiver for less money. This is the whole point.

Yes and now here is the paradox, that is what I fully intended to do when I had my Adcom GFA 7300 60x5. I thought that there was no way the amp section of the Denon would keep up with the the adcom I had. I was wrong on that. The Denon is a better amp then the one in that particular Adcom I had, which is why they probably quit making that one. So I sold it. That amp was an older design and I owned for about 5 years so maybe age was a factor I don't know. The Denon just sounded better in the mids and highs. I am sure the Adcom had more balls but it lacked the finesse of the Denon. I still love Adcom though and I have a 535 II that is at their repair center being fixed at this moment.

I would have put the mains on the Denon, & used the amp to drive surround, surround back, & center!

Nah, they sounded just different enough that would have messed everything up. I sold it with the Marantz AV560 pre/pro to a coworker, so he got a good deal and I got a hell of a good pre/Pro with an amp built in. I may get a real good seperate amp, or I might wait and get the Denon 5805 if and when that comes out

Yep, I had originally thought the Marantz AV-560 Pre/Pro was what I was not happy with, which is what prompted my search. I found out it was the amp. I just don't think it was one of Adcoms better sounding units. I had originally thought the GFA 7300 was just like having 3 535 II's in one chassis but that is not the case at all. The older 535 II sounds better as well. I think the GFA 7300 was just a dud for Adcom. Not up to the quality of their other stuff, past and present.

pds : I didn't ask if you knew a little about electronics, just about everyone here would fit that bill. I asked if you were an electronics engineer. Someone who would be qualified to address the so called better circuitry issue that you claim for your amp. (for all you know they could be buying their electronic chips form Yamaha)

In a DOUBLE BLIND test your Adcom would be indistinguishable from any other amp. of the same power.

Incidentally, amps don't create a soundstage your speakers do. Amplifiers only take a signal and make it louder. If your amplifiers are changing the audio signal in any way other than amplitude you should be searching for another amp.

And yes, you certainly were slamming Yamaha equipment. There are many people here that have spent hard earned dollars on their equipment, are very happy with it and don't appreciate you calling it substandard.
Some little remarks:

1) I know several electronics engineers who are well less capable in analyzing sound on a scientific basis than many dedicated audiophiles. I don't know if you have a degree on anything or not, but you can learn as much from books as in a university.

2) There are no perfect amps. Every single amp in the world changes the sound on top of "making it louder". And amen to that. He can look for more transparent amps and he will find them, but at a higher price tag, of course.

I don't like to see bashing on others equipment too. At least, when one says Yamaha aren't as good, one should give some hints on what their opinion is based on.

best,
BA
