Need subwoofer advice for an unusual setup.

I'm not exactly a cheapskate, but I don't believe in throwing away perfectly good speakers, so my ht system is a little different.

Current 5.0 setup:
fronts -- old ADS L730 (10" 3 way large bookshelf, on stands)
Center -- old Infinity with two 6" full range (don't know model)
Surround -- very old EPi model 50s (6.5" two ways, bought new in 1972)

These are driven by a new Pioneer VSX-1021.

After going through the advanced mcacc calibration (and discovering one of the fronts had a blown tweeter!) I am fairly impressed with the sound on the HT side. Decent but not spectacular bass, imaging is good and everybody who auditions the setup says they wish they had big front speakers like mine.

What's missing is low bass. Especially with music. Maybe I've gotten used to my near-field PC setup, with room shaking bass that goes down very low, but music programming just sounds ... thin. The eq settings on the Pioneer are meager, and using the pioneer remote app to "finger" a bass boost helps a bit, but I want bass I can feel, not just interpret. (having owned the L730s for 30 years I'm obviously enamored of their sound, but previous residences have always allowed me to put them in the corners -- and that's not an option here; they are in one corner of the room, aside the plasma stand and 5' from the corner.)

So I'm looking for a subwoofer recommendation. Complicating factor: Room is 17x20, open on two sides (system is in a corner with two walls), vaulted ceiling.

Budget is $500 max. With the volume of the room I don't expect miracles for that money, but it was hard enough to get the wife to Ok the subwoofer concept, and a dual SuperCube Trinity setup ain't happening.

All suggestions welcomed. I'm new here and very impressed with the knowledge and energy on this site. Thanks for your help.
