Need speakers - Tight budget

I am not sure how audioholics friends will react to this because I know you giys dont like recommending sub-par stuff. My plans of going for a decent decent 5.1 speaker system have died due to cash flow reasons. I had been recommended Epic Midi 125 by Alan at Axiom but suddenly, the funds are not there anymore.

Is there something someone can recommend that I could buy at this time and still have a half decent sound. It will most probably be driven by an Onkyo 605.

Thanks.

How much is your budget?

It would be hard to say if we don't know how much you want to spend and are you going with a 2.1 system now?

Tight budget

I have been listening to a slew of bookshelf speakers lately and there are so many choices out there for 500 or less. Axiom is a great speaker. Paradigm and Rbh make great speakers in that range as well.

I can go up to $600 or maybe $700 if I dont eat or drink for next several days, but for good sound I might be willing to do that.

You may want to look into the Axioms m22 is a great speaker for under 500. The RBH mc-6c is another killer those 2 are a great place to start. Also you can get a nice used set of more expensive audiophile type speakers for 500 as well. I guess it all depends on your tastes.

You can sometimes score big in the used market so that is something to check out as well. Check audiogon for good buys like this one:

Monitor Audio GR10 $600
http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrmoni&1206897815

That right there is an absolute steal considering the speakers retail for $1500. I got my Dali Ikon 2 this week from audiogon for $500 and they were dealer demos with less than 10 hours on them. (retail for $1250)

Jamie2112, That is music to my ears. If you could point me in the direction of some good one, I shall be thankful. Like I said above, I could up to max 700.
Thanks

used

Audiogon is the way forward as far as used speakers. As far as that goes you can get anything your audiophile heart could want there. I was looking at a pair of the dali's as well. Are you happy with them?

Audiogon is a great option. With used there's some risk, but if you stick to sellers with good feedback you're usually safe. I've bought and sold quite a bit of stuff there with no problems (I just got a Margules Daleth Multichannle Preamp for about 1/2 what a new one cost, fwiw).

You could get a very nice 2CH stereo pair for under $500 used. Even new that will buy nice ones. 5.1 is a bit harder- used you could probably get the main 5, but not much of a sub. That's not really a dealbreaker, though. A surround rig can sound great without a sub, and when you add one later on it's just that much more improvement.

I myself have not heard the dali line but I am sure that someone on here has heard them and will most likely chime in. I think you should try to go out and listen to some of these depending on where you live. The axioms m22 v2 is a smokin speaker for under 500. Audigon is also a great bet...

I've have a pair of Dali Ikon 2 for my 2ch system and have heard from the Ikon all the way up to the Helicon line. They are one of my favorite speaker manufacturers and make great speakers for the money. The ribbon hybrid tweeter on them is very detailed. Some day I would like to upgrade from my Ikon 2 to the Helicon 300 MKII.

Gus have you heard the sapphire st-2 before/ I own a pair of these and am super happy with them. I have heard speakers that cost 10,000 dollars that didn't sound as good. Nobody has heard of them they were a tweeter brand and I bought them used for 220 for the pair. Just wondering...

Are you willing toi build this system over a few years? If so, get a goo pair of mains for $500, then the sub, surrounds and finally the center channel. Thats the approach I wished took instead of getting something sub par and then having to rebuild at a later date.
