Hi everyone. I'm new to this site. I've been reading the forums for awhile now and enjoy all the information. My wife and bought our house about 6 months ago and I've decided it's time to add music and a HT system.

The house is about seven years old and came with 6 Sonance Symphony ceiling speakers, four down stairs in the family room and two upstairs. I'm not sure if the four down stairs were meant for good surround sound or just elevator music.

The family room is 40Lx17Wx9H (open kitchen),and the only eqipment I currently have is a Hitachi 51 inch HD projector TV and an old dvd player.

I just ordered a Yamaha rx-v2500 receiver, an Ascend 340SE center speaker, and a HSU VTF-3 MK subwoofer.

I dont know if I should use the Sonance speakers for surround or if I should just buy towers/ book shelf speakers.

Some sugestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Usually sound from above is distracing and does not make for good surround. You want your speakers at ear level.

It looks like you have made some nice choices with the receiver and sub

What do you want to use your system for? Movies or music or both?

Would you be willing to replace the ceiling or are you just looking for some front speakers? Tower/bookshelves should give you more quality sound than in ceiling speakers.

Also, what is your budget?

If the in-ceilings are properly placed for surround duty, then they should work just fine. If you're unsure about speaker locations, see pg. 12 of the Yamaha manual for guidance.
