Need some Help (Recommendations: Budget $1200ish)

First of all, I’m new here and recently have been researching around for a surround system and stumbled upon this site. Started reading around and figured I would ask for some advice on my current situation/needs (well wants actually lol).

I had intended to buy a system from a local Circuit City, but they recently closed the store. Now all we have left seems to be Best Buy/Walmart.

I had been checking out Best Buy since they currently have an interest free promotion going on with anything over $600.

The room I’m looking to put this system is relatively small (bedroom) about 15x12 or so. I’ve been checking out HTIB systems, but seems to not trigger my interest. I will be using my PS3 as the primary media player.

Ideally, I would like to put something on my best buy card to pay off over-time, but I’m open to paying some components outright from a different source.

As far as best buy goes, I have been looking at the following setup. (Decent Setup??)
Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K Reciever
Klipsch Quintet 5.1 System
Klipsch Sub-10

Total, that would run me roughly around $1500, I would like to keep it as close to $1100 if possible. (Found some of these components on eBAY for a great deal cheaper (i.e. Quintet for $350 vs. $549).

So basically what it all boils down to is that I am looking for recommendations for a system for around $1200 where I can buy some of the components from Best Buy. Any help or recommendations would be really helpful. I’d like to get the most out of what I have to spend.
Thanks!!

Welcome to the forum!

In-home audition is critical. Even on a relatively modest purchase of $1200 or so*, care taken now will pay dividends for years. Do it right the first time and postpone the dreaded upgraditis.

How your speakers and room interact will be the largest determining factor on your results, hence the importance of trying at home.

If BB allows home tials or has a generous return policy, take advantage of it. Given your limited local shops, you may want to consider ID speaker companies (Aperion, Axiom, etc.) who have solid return policies so you can try in your own home. Could be a hassle, but probably worth it if local offerings are limited, and the value is typically higher. Members here can even make pretty solid recommendations; I've made internet purchases unheard based on them and was not disappointed, but it's still not as good as hearing with your own ears.

Give us your room dimensions and characteristics (i.e. carpeted, hard floors, sparse or congested decor, windows, open to other rooms...) and you will surely get some speaker recommendations as a start. [I see you did that...]

I see no problems buying components like the AV receiver from BB, just make sure you're getting what you need feature-wise. You'll want to get something which will be at least adequate, preferably more than adequate, to drive your speakers of choice, so this equipment choice is usually secondary to the speakers. I'll let others more knowledgable on the vidoe-centric aspect chip in, I'm just a darn music lover.

*We'll get you hooked up for $1200 with kit far superior to any HTIB, but this is an addiction, not a hobby, so watch out. This is just the tip of the iceberg!

I have thought of going used. Trying to see what I can come up with new at the moment. I like your suggestion, a neighbor has something pretty similar.

Thanks for the reply

Listening for yourself is key like Ski2black stated above but if you can only listen to junk, it doesn't help a lot.

Are you wanting 2.1 or 5.1? I would pick a good 2.1 or even 2.0 over a modest to poor 5.1.

This would put a smile on your face everytime you turn it on. Also look at their "B" stock for a good deal.

These would be nice:

Also, look at Audioholics online store:

One could always go the Behringer route with a decent sub too but they are kind of ugly.

ski2xblack, thanks for the reply.

I'll have to check out what limitations are with some trials and such.

To throw some additional details out there,

15x12ish room
One entrance (Solid door to enter room)
Two windows (it is a corner room so one on each outside wall)
Hardwood floor
Standard 8ft ceiling
Somewhat cluttered due to bed, entertainment center, desk, dresser, but has a good amount of walking space.
Walls are drywall

Anything else just let me know.

+1 Listening first but unfortunately at that price point it's not always possible. The downside is that you are going to pay 50% more for the same quality at Best Buy.

+1 buying a good 2.0 system and then coming back and adding a center, sub and surrounds later. Perhaps the EMP E55Ti ($800) that so many are snapping up combined with a $450 refurbished Onkyo TX-SR707.

Or a 2.1 system possibly with a EMP E5Ti (review) combined with a nice subwoofer and a refurbished Onkyo receiver.

+1 njedpx3's suggestion of considering the SVS bundle as a possibility. Add in a refurbished Onkyo TX-SR607 or 707 ($300 or $450).

For the DYI oriented you could go with 3 pair ($131/pr) of the highly regarded Behringer B2030P bookshelf studio monitors but they do need some some simple mods you can find on here but they should be able to handle a room that size. Add the PB12-NSD sub linked above and a refurbished receiver and you're styling. However the Behringers are not exactly pretty.

I totally understand the whole "Best Buy" money draw. I had the Pioneer 1016 and it was an excellent starter receiver. It does pretty much anything. Being in a similar situation (w/a Best Buy card), just purchase the things you really like there with it and put away some cash and find good deals for the other stuff you don't want to compromise on. The suggestions in the previous emails were dead on (like audiogon). Look and listen around to find what you truely desire, not what Best Buy wants you to get.

Thanks for all the replys guys!! I really like the SVS system some of you spoke of. Seems to be a back order on them though (5.1). Keep the recommendations coming, I posted the room specs in a previous reply. Trying to gather as much feedback as I can to make the most out of my purchase. Also, I'm not looking to dump huge amounts of cash into this over time. I'd like to throw an initial $1200 or so at it and possibly expand some in the future, but not looking to go too overboard with it.

Trying to get a good experience with the initial spending. Thanks for all of your feedback so far. You guys are truly awesome!
