Hello all, I am new to the forums and could use a little help...

i recently bought a pioneer vsx-816 reciever based on all the great reviews I have read on the web, while the reciever sounded excellent with movies, it did no justice to music what so ever. I was first running the bose acoustimass 10 system through the reciever, I sent them back after hooking them up. I then bought a pait of klipsch synergy B2 from best buy, sounded extremely squashed when I got home, so today i went and bought a pair of boston acoustics cr67 speakers. They sounded fantastic in the store playing through a denon dvr-1707 reciever. I brought hthem home and they sounded horrible. So i returned the pioneer, i picked up a denon avr-1507 reciver. The bostons sounded great through them, the klipsch sounded pretty good except the midrange was way to loud. AFter about an hour of listening.... the denon has smoke coming from it.

So tomorrow, i am returning the denon and the klipsch speakers. I am also contimplating returning the bostons as well. I may keep the bostons though I am still unsure.

As for now I have an old pioneer 5.1 reciever hooked up which sounds pretty god for music, but sucks for HT.

Should I go and get another pioneer thinking that there was maybe a problem wit hthe one o bought, or should I look at something else. Im looking to spend around 300-500 - id prefer to buy from best buy since I have a 350 store credit from them. But i oculd use that for something else if i have to..... Since I listen to ALOT of loud music on my system, id like to get something that will sound good for both. Any recommendations? I am also looking at the fluance speakers, any suggestions on those?

Thanks a million!!

One of the most important things that must be done is to properly calibrate the levels of each channel. Was that done?

Is your room bare with wood floors and minimal furniture? The room imparts the most influence on the sound, followed by the speakers. If you are expecting that one ~$500-ish receiver is going to sound substantially better than another you will be disappointed. While there are certainly slight differences in power and features, they are all pretty much the same.

You need to calibrate the receiver and experiment with speaker placement as well as treat the room (to whatever degree you feel necessary). That will go a long way toward achieving acceptable sound quality.

it doesnt seem to be a placement issue. being that the speakers sound very good through the denon reciever and my old pioneer vsx-d557, i can onlyt pinpoint the problem to the reciever - has anyone else had any issues with the pioneer reciever and music
???

Did you properly set-up the system?

Not counting plugging it into the wall, and hooking-up the speakers.

I posted alot of information in the links above. You have not had time to read any of it.

yes i did.... i ran through the auto mcacc system, then fine tuned it futher ythrough manual mcacc.

judging from the reviews and the responses I ma getting form this post, i am starting to believe that the unit I had was defective, and maybe I should buy a new one....

I am not sure what more I can add after MDS' post. He tried to tell you that the acoustic space, your room, your speakers makes or breaks the setup, period, along with the quality of the software. Since things sounded good to you at the store's room, not in yours, another indication that your room has issues.

I am also getting the feeling that you are driving the daylights out of your systems. While that Boston is 8 ohms, it is only 89dB sensitive.

OUCH!

That would make a huge difference between them and Klipsch. There would have to be two totally different system calibrations for each set of speakers.

no doubt that my room has issues. But listening to these speakers with my pioneer vsx-d557 and denon 1507 is enjoyable, through the pioneer vsx-816 - there is no life to the sound.

As for the bostons getting a beating, I was actually thinking of keeping them to use as surrounds, and getting different set of fronts....

He didn't mean the Boston's were taking a beating, the receiver was.

so the bostons blew my denon???
If you cranked it too loud, they could have. This would usually take a good bit of the receiver going into protection mode on a regular basis. And, it usually gets the tweeters first from the amp clipping. I doubt it could happen in one or two days.

this happened in about 2 hours.... Anyway - i think i need a push in the right directipon here. I am really lookin to rebuild my home theater from the ground up.. THe bostons sound good, but at loud levels they seem to get a little sloppy. I have been reading so many reviews on different speakers on here - as for now, i have speakers, i dont love them but they will do. I have apprx 600 to thrpow at a recoever right now. Doe sit pay to really try any other reoievers?
