Need small, yet powerful bookshelf speakers to fit into check-in luggage

I am in the US until the 20th of April and I would like to take back 5 speakers and a sub to setup a 5.1 in my small living room. Right now the following speakers are on my short list, but I need more suggestions. I would like to keep the dimensions as small as possible since they will go in with checked-in luggage at the airport... pair cost to be approx. $350

Ascend CBM-170SE (12"x9"x10") $348/pair

Axiom M3 (13.5"x8.5"x8.25") $320/pair

SVS SBS-01 (12"x7"x9.5") $225/pair

Klipsch RB-15 (11.2"x6.5"x7.75") $300/pair

Any other suggestions I should be looking at? I am a noob at this, don't really know which one I should get...

What dimension do you need to be the smallest? Whats the largest you can accommodate? What are your listening preferences (music/movie %). What kind of speakers have you heard in the past and liked? What sound characteristic to do you like(warm, bright, flat...etc)?

If I can keep the dimension under 12" for height, under 8" for width, and under 10" for depth it's good.

I will be listening mostly movies, like 70%, and 30% music.

I have only heard Bose, Polk, and JBL speakers in the past. Since I am not an audio guy I couldn't tell you which one was what... That's why I am having a hard time deciding which brand to get when prices and size are so close to each other... and that's why I am here :)

Sound characteristics? Hmmm, somewhere between warm and flat is good.

Ok, well, I can tell you the klipsch might not fit into your sound characteristics. Others have stated they pertain to a brighter sound, but it doesn't bother everyone, as they sound more "detailed".

I myself prefer a warmer speaker, just like you. The ascends and SVS speakers will fit into this category. The Axioms are also flat speakers, but I don't know about warm. I have heard they are a little bass shy.

As far as others, I will need some time to do some research.

Hope this helps,

I just heard these again yesterday and every time I've heard them I've been impressed with the amount of sound they produce for their small size.

Mirage
nanosats(5)+nanosub
or unitheater(2)+nanosub
or unitheater(1)/nanosats(2)+nanosub

Not sure where you're from, though, so these may be available to you already.

Ditto. I've never heard the SVS offering but most everything I've read indicates they are comparable. I have Ascend HTM-200's in a small room and am quite pleased.

IMO.... you're wasting your time if you're basing your purchase on what will fit in your luggage. If quality components arent available in your homeland and you cant resist the urge to buy something during your US visit, for Gods sake, buy something worth spending your hard earned money on, and then pay to ship it home to you.

Anthony Gallo might fit the bill... small form factor with definite whoooooa factor

And I must agree with the others, if you're basing your decisino on what will fit into your suitcase, more than likely you'll be disappointed. why do you wish to purchase speakers in the u.s.? is price a factor? remember, if you get your bags inspected when you arrive at your destination, you may also be forced to pay customs. those customs fees can be pretty hefty sometimes, believe me, i know!

I really appreciate how you are all replying to my original question..... oh wait, sorry, I mean I really appreciate how I've received more criticism than help.

I am basing my decision on availability of space and on cost. Plus my room is small and I like the look of bookshelf speakers. Why is that a bad thing? Can we respond to the original question?

Imagine, if you can, you have a small/medium sized room, you want bookshelf speakers smaller than 12"x8"x10" for a 5.1 setup and that cost approx. $350/pair. Which speakers would you buy for your own place and why?

Please answer back with a condescending tone again.

Although I don't feel the swearing is necessary, I agree.

You guys need to learn, that not everyone who comes here is willing to do things the way you do.

All you can do is suggest. So, if he said that he doesn't want to pay shipping, and wants to do it this way, you have right to tell him otherwise. Also, you can "can" the attitude right now. We don't treat other members like that.

I apologise for the other members response Saint0, just put them on your ignore list.

This thread!!

This thread is now on my ignore list. If you come here asking for help, why are you surprised that you get some advice that maybe you did not want to here? You don't have to listen to it and you don't have to like it. You can even express that you don't like it. You may have perceived some of the responses you got as condescending. That is your prerogative, but I can tell you that swearing about it is not going to get you any help. People want to help others here. If you swear at them, that kinda takes the urge to help you away. This is my opinion. Of course you can do what you want.

I am not saying that you should not be able to get advice about speakers. I'm just saying that you can expect to get some advice that is well intentioned that you may not have asked for as well.

Yes, I agree and I'm putting this thread on my inore list as well. That guy can choose his 'luggage' speakers without my help as well. I always love it when people ask questions like............."What are the best speakers smaller than 10 inches tall" Bose Cubes maybe???

Im out........

LOL

Yeah, I thought they may actually be (somehow) TOO small for what you wanted, but for their size, I tell you, they can fill a room up.

Good luck finding what you want.

Talk about my mother again and you won't make it back to where you're from. Or maybe it'll be YOU that's shipped back in luggage. :)

Come to think of it, it IS a stupid idea.

Although I can't necessarily speak for any of the other forum posters, I didn't get the impression that anyone was criticising (for the most part). The impression that I got, and speaking for myself in my own post, was that we were just trying to point out some other factors that could potentially come into play when considering which speakers to choose.

The impression that I got from saint0's original post is that (s)he wants a home theater system with a huge UMPH and WHOOOOA factor, but yet will still fit into his luggage. The point that that the other forum posters were trying to make was that it would certainly not be an easy task, that's all. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. So, that begs the question, "what's the point of even asking a question when you're merely hoping to get the answer you're looking for."

Did anyone call him an idiot? Not that I can recall. Did he make himself out to be one in his last post? Yup! Sorry...

By all means, please do! And congrats on the new pair of Onix. Although I have never heard them for myself, I only hear great things about them, and ironically enough, would easily fit into luggage. :p

What was pointed out by the others were merely alternatives and corrects one at that. The original poster may not have even thought of that. Nobody told him he had to do it that way, just some of the drawbacks he may encounter by taking them home via suit case.

Questions that spring to mind by his method are these;
a.) Do all speakere mentioned have cross border warranties?
b.) If A is true, then is he gonna remove the packaging from the speakers and simply stick them in his luggage because boxes and packing adds weight and bulk.
c.) If he does remove the packaging, how protected are his purchases going to be? You know how well luggage is treated.. *NOT*

We have every right to list possible pro's and con's. You need to rethink where you stand on this.
