Just started out playing piano, and would like to set up a modest playback/recording system. I have a Terratec DMX6 USB audio card, and i need to pair it with a decent set of monitors to match the card. My budget is relatively modest, perhaps something around 200$. I'm not sure i can afford a mixer for the time being, so the monitors would have to be pre-amplified. Not sure if this is going to limit my choices. I don't want to settle for something that is not going to take advantage of my audiocard just to save a cople of hundred bucks, but i am on a tigh budget so it has to be something that isn't terribly expensive. Any help would be appreciated.

Commercial speakers that can effectively monitor a piano at such a price point are going to be difficult. You might be able to do it by pouring some sweat into a good DIY 2-way bookshelf like
with constrained layer damped walls and an outbound solid state low output impedance amp.

Commercially, i guess your best bet would be the Behringer 2030A. I would recommend doing the diffraction and port mods.
