Need purchase recomendations

Back when I was in college, I bought some Infinity SM 110's, a center channel and some bookshelf speakers for the surrounds (all by Infinity). I still have these speakers and they suit my needs just fine. I currently don't have a sub and would like one. My question is...should I upgrade my receiver and add a sub and keep the remaining speakers or is there a better way to go? If the simple upgrade is adequate, any recommendations on what to get? I haven't done any shopping in about 15 years so I know I'm way behind the times, but I'm also not made of money either so that hinders things a tad. Ideally, if I could upgrade for $1000 that would be the preferred method. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

If you havent bought anything in 15 years your receiver must me pro logic. Since you wont be able to watch anything using a modern interface I would probably start with the receiver before anything else.

You're on the right track. The receiver upgrade and sub addition will definitely improve the HT experience. $1K should be sufficient for decent gear. Your room size will help size the sub appropriately, but if you're in an apartment situation that'll need to be taken into account.

My first reco would be something along the lines of an Onkyo 707 and an SVS PB10-NSD.

That's kind of what I was thinking. It is a Pro Logic receiver. The room is kind of large as the living room, dining room and kitchen are all open and essentially create one big room. The dimensions of the open space are probably 20 x 30'. Not sure if that changes the sub recommendation or not. Also, I'm in a house and not an apartment.

Hm. My vote is receiver. IIRC, Pro Logic uses a matrixed center. What I really mean to imply is that I think dialogue intelligibility, along with all of the other goodies (more discrete channels, better panning within front stage), would be desirable. House shaking LFE is fun and all, but dialogue + front stage will always benefit, no matter if it's action, comedy, chick flick, you name it.

20x30 needs awesome subwooferage, but one step at a time. I am just baby-stepping you for now, until the other freaks get you to refinance your home just to make movies more fun.

I also agree with the receiver first, then sub, or both first. I think pro logic has discrete l/c/r channels, and a matrixed rear channel. I could be wrong though.

Keep in mind that I have no hands on experience but emotivas sub for around $300 seemed like a lot of bang for the buck and you could get a decent Denon with the remainder.
