Need Oppo 983 Help!

I just got a 983 and I have a couple questions. I have it hooked to a Yammie 3800 with Emotiva XPA-3 amp and for CD's the sound is unbelievable, almost so precise it is too sharp. I watched a DVD last night and comparing it to the BR players out there it is the next best thing. The picture is pretty amazing.

Here's my prob:

Like I said the sound with CD's is amazing but the sound with the movie was not that great. There was no oomph, rumbling, explosion, etc. when there should have been in the movie. Just the voice was good.

Here's my connections:

Optical to the receiver for dvd audio
Analog to the reciever for cd's audio
HDMI to TV for picture

I went into the setup and put all speakers to large, put the digital output to raw b/c if it is on PCM it only recognizes the R/L speakers(no surround). What am I missing. Do I have all of the connections correct?

The other thing is my receiver is showing Digital and Pro Logic II on it which it never used to with my old DVD player (Only Dolby Digital). I even went into the setup and turned PLII off but it still is showing on my Receiver. Could it be possible that that's the decoding that's taking place and that's why it's not very dynamic? It's also is showing that all seven speakers are active. Impossible since I only have 5.1 and that's what I have it selected in setup for sound mixing.

I'm lost!!!

Thanks

I'm not sure if that Oppo has such a thing, but some players have a feature that limits the dynamics of the sound. (soft noises are a bit louder, explosions are less..um..explosive). Many of them actually have them turned on by default.

It may called something on the order of DRC.

Check your player's menu.

The Yamaha receivers have such a thing as well. Look for the DRC option in, I believe, the sound portion of the menu.

I did see something about that in the manual. Do turn it off if indeed it is on? I think my receiver is set to max b/c I thought it meant the it would put the full dynamics in.

I'll keep playin with it to see if I can get it right. Thanks!

On the receiver you want it to the max setting.
But for watching a movie at more moderate levels the min/auto setting comes in handy. But yes turn it off within the player, At least to see if it improves things.

You want to turn off that night listening mode... I don't know if the 983 has it specifically, but if it does, turn it completly off :) FYI, the 980 does NOT have this feature, so im guessing the 983 doesnt either.
