Hey,

I'm a noob on this board, but I'm on a bunch of car forums if anyone has a car performance or maintenance question. This is my first post and here's my situation:

I've read the sticky about generally posting about what one should buy, but I do have some issues and constraints to deal with and could use some good opinions. My good Sony receiver crapped out in December, and I've been using my dad's old Pioneer receiver probably from 1975 for the past few months, and now its finally starting to die as well. I've got some awesome and large Polk Audio main left and right channels, as well as my center which is a smaller JBL but does the job, and that's probably all that I'm going to be able to hook up b/c the girlfriend doesn't want speakers all over the place, I've tried to argue, but you can probably guess where I lead myself with that conversation :). Does anyone know of a good A/V receiver that has a good three channel option that actually sounds decent? I'm looking at receivers in the $200 or below neighborhood, and I've been trying to find something online, but I can't really find what I want b/c everything is 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 and I won't have the need for all the extra channels. My old Sony that blew out in December was probably 6-7 years old, and had a good three channel option if you choose to only run the front three, so that's what I'm really looking for. If you guys don't know of anything, I guess I'll just go pick up a 5.1 receiver and use whatever channels I need, I don't think I need would need a powered sub b/c my main speakers have 10's and two 5.25 speakers in a sealed cabinet, so I'd also like to have a receiver that can really pump the bass into the main channels when a powered sub is not used.

Also, FYI, I'm probably going to be buying a 32-37 inch HDTV (not plasma or LCD) probably a projector TV with a flat screen before the end of the year as well. So that's where I'm at.

Any opinions?

Thanks!!

David

Welcome David...

Hi David and welcome to AH!

Couple of quick questions for you regarding your post. You mentioned you're running a pair of Polks for your mains along w/a JBL center. Do you know the ohm rating for these speakers, specifically the Polks? I ask due to your mentioning of your Sony receiver crapping out and your dad's old Pioneer doing the same recently and thinking that these receivers may have been trying to drive some power hungry speakers without sufficient amplification.

This may not be the case, but if you can provide what ohms they are and possibly the model type, I can rule this out as a cause to those receivers going belly up due to this. There are a few entry level receivers out there that can push a decent load, but before suggesting any, if you can provide this other information, that would definitely help first... -TD

2-3 channel HT

As suggested above your polks may be killing those low end receivers. If you are limited to 3 speakers, your best bet might be a 2.1 system with the mains and a sub. If you decide to go this route, check out the HK stereo receivers for about $200.

Hk has a company store on ebay - units come with full warranties. Usually pretty reasonable. You may be able to buy new as well for a good price if you do a bit of net shopping.

We've bought two units through the hk store on ebay with good luck.

Bandit.
