need new receiver with hdmi

Budget $1500.

Need to choose between Sony STR-DA4300ES , Denon 3808 and Onkyo SR875. It has been 10 years since I purchased my last amp, so I have been out of the market until now, my last one being a Sony ES model and I had no problems. I owned 2 Onkyos before that without problems. In fact, all are still working.

I was leaning towards the Sony because of GUI.

What I have read so far.

Onkyo... best bang for buck but get very hot.. cheaper when comparing apples to apples, but I am worried about "where did they cut their costs to do so"? Rated THX Ultra II, but I have heard that others would qualify also, but chose not to pay licensing fees to advertise this. Is this true?

Sony.. Rated best at cnet... have read that people do not like their sound.. have 6 hdmi inputs, but do not know how I might need so many

very light (?) could this be an issue? , confusing remote, but supposed to have better sound of the three...

I love music, but do not brag to have professional ears... I suppose I could hear the difference if all were set up to compare, but is there really that much difference when using the same speakers and eq settings?

I am a newby compared to many here. I have owned many amps, but have never spent over $1000 before.

Please help with non-biased answers.

Personally, I would consider the Onkyo 805 if you don't need the Reon upscaling on the 875. Sony's seem to get a bad rap here due to price and features compared to similar other manufacturers, but I have never owned one. Additionally, it sounds like you have a good history with Onkyo products. As far as the THX rating, to me that is more of a "peace of mind" issue than anything else, but others can comment on this.

Denon and Yamaha are also good choices as evidenced by the reviews on this site and forum. If it were me, I would go with the Onkyo 805 though since it offers the best bang for the buck currently.

What are the models of the speakers? The reason I ask is because beyond the scaling, the 875 offers only an additional 10 watts of power over the 805. If you don't need all those extra features, pocket the $900.00 difference (805 can be had for $620.00 -$700.00) for other future upgrades. Cheers.

I googled Eosone and I could only come up with a set of towers that are 8 ohm/90db. It's not going to take a $1,500 receiver to power those. If these are the same rating, going with the 805 is a prudent suggestion, IMO.

I have used 80 and 100 watts per channel in past with no problem. I believe 100 is all I need. I also want at least 4 hdmi inputs as I would already need 3. cable box, ps3 and blu ray dvd. I realize I have two blu ray plyers, but I need 1 fixed so my son can play ps3 on his tv when I am watching dvd. blu ray sony 300 that I plan to update to possibly one that plays hd and blu ray.


But my main concern is getting the imputs and other goodies that I might need in the future, not just today. I only upgrade every 9-10 years.

I also want to have two more rooms of sound (outside and br), I may also add video outside.

The Onkyo TX-SR805 has better benchtest performance than the TX-SR875.

As others have mentioned, the Scaler feature is not worth the extra price especially when you could use the money saved to get a Blu-ray player which will do a very good job upscaling and Blu-ray movies are true high definition as well, so there is nothing to lose.

The reason I don't like the Sony STR-DA4300ES is because it uses the same amplification platform as the lower end STR-DG1000 which costs much less than that model. That Sony has current limiting which only allows it to output 60 watts or so with all channels driven, the Onkyo TX-SR805 can do twice that with all channels driven. The Onkyo TX-SR805 has more power than any of the receivers mentioned in this thread. It also has more power than any new receiver in it's price range and far above it.
