Hey guys, I finally managed to get my new Denon 2808 CI and Panasonic BD35 hooked up today. Lets just say it was a LOT of work. Been messing with it all day. Needless to say, I am worn out! :D:D Anyways, luckily everything seems to be working. This was my first time using Audyssey. I am very impressed, but not sure I did it correctly. My plan is to run it again and get some more practice.

Here is what I have set-up. I have analog cable coming from the wall into my 42" LG lcd. I then have my new Panny BR player connected to my receiver via hdmi. The same holds true for my Toshiba A-3. Then, my new Denon is connected to me lcd via hdmi. I also used a "Y"-adaptor to connect both of my LFM-1Pluses. My front, center, and subs are connected to my Denon. Lastly, I have a digital co-axial cable coming from the output on my lcd to the input on my Denon for use when watching cable tv. Will the digital co-axial connection cause any trouble since both the Panny BR player and the Toshiba A-3 are connected to the Denon via hdmi and then to my lcd via hdmi?

Lastly, I wacthed the first part of Underworld Evolution on BR today, and all it said on my Denon display was "Dolby-Digital". What happened to the new codecs? I must have done something wrong here, but can NOT figure it out.:confused: I must say, however, that the sound was amazing. Much more dynamic giving me a "you are there" effect! I really really really like that effect when watching a movie. ;);) Anyways, can any of you offer me some assistance? I could really use it. Thanks for your time.

Cheers,

Phil

Phil,

(1) I don't think that the optical connection between the LCD and the receiver will cause any problems at all.

(2) Regarding the soundtrack saying "Dolby Digital", do you know which audio track you had selected on the disc? That disc comes with an uncompressed 5.1 track, as well as regular compressed Dolby Digital 5.1.

Yeah, I was going to say to make sure True HD soundtrack or DTS MA soundtrack is selected in the movie menu. This seems like a good starting point.

Hi Adam, that was quick........LOL!!!! :p:p Thanks for offering me some help. Glad to hear the dig-coaxial cable should pose no problem. However, as far as the DD vs. the new codecs what do you mean? Are you saying that some of the BR copies were recorded in DD and some recorded in 5.1 uncompressed? I believe that is referred to "PCM" if I am correct? Please elaborate a bit more Adam. Been messing with this all day long.........LOL!!!!:eek:

Cheers,

Phil

Thanks for posting croseiv. This movie did not have a menu. It just played from the get go. Guess, I can see what is in the menu. There was only (1) disk in there. Sorry, but this is my first attempt at BR. Still a bit confused and somewhat aggravated. This can be frustrating.

First, I should have said this in my previous post - congratulations on your new gear!!!

Second, that blu-ray is just like a lot of the DVDs that you probably have. It has more than one audio track on it. Just like your DVDs might have Dolby Digital, DTS, and Pro-Logic all on one disc; that blu-ray has an uncompressed 5.1 soundtrack (I don't know which codec, but it is PCM like you said), as well as English and French Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks.

Check the case and see if it has any of the new soundtracks on it (True HD or DTS MA). It's remotely possible they may not be on the disc.

BTW, you should be able to go into a menu and select the audio track. You might need to set up the player to output the PCM version versus the bitstream (which would be the Dolby Digital tracks).

Your remote control might even have an "Audio" button on it to select which sound track you want. I'll look that up right now...

The remote does indeed have an "Audio" button. It's right by the "0" button.

Lmao......I went into the menu and under "Languages" I found the 5.1 uncompressed track. Oh man, I feel like a dumb-a$$.:eek: It has taken me all day to figure this out. Of course, with the help of you guys. ;);) Anyways, when I selected that option it now shows multi-channel in on the display. However, the sound was even better than with DD. I am like holy crap that sounds great!:eek: Thought my (2) subs were going to rip me room apart!:cool: Oh well, I am quite pleased for the time being. Much work to do yet. Thanks Adam for your help.

croseiv, it says DD. Nothing about the new codecs whatsoever. Anyways, I think I figured it out with yours and Adam's help. Thank you so much.

Yes, it sounds noticeable better. For one, the dialogue was louder and clearer. Second, the impacts were much more pronounced. I am very excited about all of this BR stuff. Thank God the format war is over!!!!!! ;);) Thanks once again croseiv for your kind words.

Me too Phil! Honestly, I was quite surprised at the better SQ of the uncompressed tracks. It's much more dynamic and full of impact. It gives the Ultras a workout for sure.

Yeah, I agree very much. But, I don't have an Ultra! :(:( Oh well, maybe some day I will. Until that time comes, I will just have to settle for my (2) LFM-1Pluses. Not that there is really anything wrong with that. ;);)

hey!

Hi speakerman! you must be the man when it comes to speakers or somethig? anyway congrats on getting new toys, and getting them to work! I have a question for ya though. You said thst you run the optical out from your tv. why the tv and not say the BR player or Cable box?

And second when it comes to audessy, I say try it then change it. everybodys hearing is different. I use a test disc when i get something new. My test disc is something I've heard a hundred times, so I know what its supposed to sound like.

BTW my test disc is The Grateful Dead 10-28-90 Le Zenith, Paris. recorded off the sound board with a sony D8 DAT.

Hi Phan and thanks for your kind words. Both my Toshiba A-3 and my new Panny BR player are connected to my Denon receiver via hdmi. Then, the Denon receiver is connected to my 42" lcd tv. I do not use a cable box of any kind. The cable comes from the wall and is connected directly to my lcd. Hence, I use the co-axial out of my lcd into the tv/cable input on my Denon in order to get DD when watching cable tv. I could of have used an optical cable instead of the coaxial, but it would have made no difference for that application. Lastly, I just ran a quick room calibration mainly as a means to get used to the menu system with respect to my Denon. I prefer to use my Rives Test CD II and my RS SPL meter for fine tuning. However, I need to get a bit more practice with Audyssey first. Thanks for posting.

Cheers,

Phil
