Hi,

i am totally new here. i wasn't interested in the home theater before, so i asked my best friend to help me get and set up my 5.1 home theater. now that i am interested i think i need to step away from Bose system i have now (anybody disagree?)

Here's what i have:

Denon AVR-788
Bose Acoustimass 700 black color
PS3
TV Samsung 5 series 1080p

i plan to sell my Bose system and use that money to get a better system ( not sure yet how much i could actually sell it tho). i will use it to listen to classical music, especially classical piano in lossless format and watch hi-def movies from PS3. Since i don't think i can get much from that Bose system so i would like to keep the budget as close as the money i can get from selling it without losing the quality tho. i dont mind paying a bit more

i live in an apartment. i'm a person who likes spending for futureproof so i am considering something that will last at least 5 years.

Please let me know what you guys think

Since you're in an apt., and have experienced cubes, I recommend staying with them. I'd give the Aperion 4B Harmony a try for $999. You get 30 days, plus free shipping. If you want bigger fronts then plug in their 4T mini-towers.

Anything will be an upgrade speaker wise. Even a set from the speaker company will be a better set.

I'm SVS for home theater, but since your doing classical listening your needs are very different.

Classical music is the toughest to reproduce for midrange woofers. You need to consider this when selecting a speaker system.

Until we know your budget we can't really give a proper selection.

Um he said he wants a real system. No way he should stick with blose.

orb and gallo make some nice cubes, as well as focal. If it were me id move into bookshelves for the front soundstage and demo as many as you can. Sad to say but, you can more than likley recoupe most of the money you spent on the blose:confused:

I didn't say stick with Bose. If you know Aperion's products you would understand that their 4B speakers are a small 2-way design that many would consider a cube.

i'm thinking about moving into bookshelf too. i see people recommending it than a cube speaker. With bookshelf, i have to position the tweeter at my ear level right?

as far as my budget goes, i think i can make it to about $1000. i would prefer to keep it there unless i get sth worth spending a bit more.

Thanks a lot for your help guys

Ideally yes, you want the speaker at ear level. There are many stands out there that look nice and will help accomplish this.

Seems pretty self explanatory but the more money you spend the more choices you have. Since you like classical, I would recommend demoing some local speakers. Paradigm, NHT, Deftech, Polk, PSB, etc. There are some great internet direct companies (SVS, HSU, Emotiva, Ascend, Axiom, etc). I have heard that the Axiom bookshelf speakers are very musical (M22's, and M3's) so you may want to research those.

Is this strictly music or are you still looking at 5.1?

I like the idea of a set of neutral bookselves and a decent sub to shore up the bottom end. Classical stuff has multiple instruments that reach below 40Hz.

The Axiom M22 would do nicely. I really liked the Paradigm Studio 40 when I listened to them as well. Maybe listen to a PSB Imagine bookself as well.

This is not strictly for music. i do both music and movies so i like the idea of hv 5.1. For me, it's really hard to say which one i do the most, so i would love to hv speakers that can do both if possible. if i really hv to choose, i would give a little bit more priority to movies.

OK. So 1,000 for 5.1? I have not listened to systems in that price range.

It's helpful but no always acheivable. Some tweeters have better off-axis response, and aren't as necessary at ear level, but another option is to angle to speaker so that your ears are on axis with the tweeters. I think if you are within 10 to 20 degrees you'll be fine.

Had I meant Bose in a positive, I'd be looking for a hari-kari knife!:D

Romantic, the Paradigm Studio 40's were unfortunately discontinued, too bad as I really thought highly of them. They do appear on the used market from time-to-time

If you like the Paradigm sound, try studio 20 for fronts with a sub; very potent. You will need stands with those, or shelves built in your house.
Sorry you bought Bose but it's nothing that can't be corrected.

Its not that I had a price range in mind (its your budget/money), I was just makeing sure I understood your goals/budget.

I should not have suggested the Studio line as they are above your budget.

I like towers, but for the money you are looking to spend, I would stick with bookshelves. You will get better quality sound for the money.

For my goals, i think you know already for both classical music and hi-def movies, but for my budget, i just estimated it and it doesn't have to be exact, so i would love to hear your recommended 5.1 system regardless of my budget :) if it's really worth it, i will do my best to get it. i might just have to wait a bit longer.

The reason i think about towers is when i get bookshelf, i need to get a stand as well, so why not just invest that money into speakers instead. i'm not sure if it's the right idea tho.

Well, I guess the speaker stands would cost you less than $100 but if you want to upgrade it to towers, it's like doubling your budget. Based on my research, tSc and Axiom are very good speakers for their price. If you can find KEF iQ series, they also sound really good but you need a subwoofer to complete the low freq (bass).
I also have a limited budget for 2.1 system including receivers etc etc, I'm getting a pair of Definitive technology StudioMonitor 450 (bookshelf) with a pair of stands. I hope these speakers will answer my thirst.
