need help w/ phono preamp BIG HUM!!!

i have been having real headache w/ HUM... i have NAD 917 pre-amp...just bought technics 1210 to upgrade tt from phillips...thought it was causing HUM>>> however the new table hums as well. i have a phono pre-amp...cheapo..pfantone...going into aux...ground connected to amp, securely. tried table on home theatre system w/ phono input...NO HUM....am i looking at having to get another amp w/ phono or will better phono pre amp work...very confused over this one...
oh one more thing, the phono preamp humms when the tt cables are not even plugged into it.

In that case your phono preamp is cheap junk. Send it to the recycling center.

Get one of these.

The Audiotechnica is on sale for $43, and it will be fine.

thanks...will try better one

also if you know of anyone interested in trading NAD 1600 for my 917...i would be interested. the 917 has more video bells and whistles than i need ...but is GREAT preamp...and excellent condition...all books and remotes also
