i recently bought an Energy CF-70 home theater system with an onkyo TX-NR609 receiver.... Now i'm trying to configure it but i am a total newbie...

It is asking me for a hertz value for each of my speakers
right now it is set to:

Front: 80Hz THX
Center: 80Hz THX
Surround: 50Hz
And subwoofer is set to 80Hz i think

On the config screen it says "for tower speakers, set to full-band. for small speakers, set to crossover depend on size of the speaker". Does this means i should set the fronts to the highest possible value, since i have powerful energy cf-70 tower speakers ??

thanks

The cross over value you set determines the point at which the sound is redirected from the speaker to the subwoofer. 80 Hz is usually the best setting unless you have very small speakers that cannot play very low.

You can leave the fronts and center at 80 Hz but 50 Hz for the surrounds is likely to be too low. You need to look at the speaker specs and check the -3 dB point. If for example, it says '100 Hz - 20 kHz +/- 3dB' you'd want the xover set to at least 100 Hz but better yet 120 Hz. The rule of thumb is 1/2 to 1 octave higher than the -3dB point.

You don't set any xover for the sub itself. If you're talking about the setting that is called something like LPF of LFE, that determines the highest frequency for the '.1' (low frequency effects or LFE) channel that the sub will play. The LFE channel can go as high as 120 Hz and it's best to set it there.

If the sub has an LFE input which bypasses its internal xover, use that connection; otherwise turn the xover dial on the sub as high as it can go to get it out of the way. The receiver will handle the xover and you don't want dueling xover frequencies between the receiver and the sub.

Last question:

Option "LPF of LFE" (crossover of the LFE channel's low-pass filter) is currently set to 120Hz. Should i change it?

thanks!
