Your list looks good.

However, I would still think about the Reaction Audio sub
http://reaction-audio.myshopify.com/collections/subwoofers/products/gamma-15?variant=1107629493

Or HSU VTF-3mk5
http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/vtf-3mk5HP.html

However, the Rythmik will not be bad

B-stock - means they work as new - however they may have very minor cosmetic flaws.
They could be returns, or failed the overall cosmetic inspection.

So out of those two subs listed, which one would you choose?

Due to the fact that I would not want to wait for my sub to be built,
My first choice is the HSU

Either one will handle the job in your room.

Ok thanks! Didn't know they had a build time.

The VTF-15H is on clearance. Data-Bass measurements. If you don't mind a few weeks of lead time from Reaction Audio, the Echo 15 would be my choice. The Gamma that zieg linked is sealed, and won't have the same level of output as the Echo. The PowerSound Audio XV15SE would also be worth considering, or the previous model, the XV15. Tom V. always welcomes people to hop onto his website to chat, and can offer some excellent advice without pressuring you to buy anything. When you chat, you're actually chatting with the designer of the PSA subs and not just some customer service minion.

Ordered my Sierra 1s. I'll pick them up this weekend. Still trying to get into contact with reaction audio.

You can contact them by phone or Email - they are responsive - just keep trying
Called them all day yesterday and a couple times today. I did get a email last night from Jeremy. Hopefully I can get this ordered. Turn around is 3weeks.

Hi Skeeter,

You have an interesting situation. First of all you will have lots of folks telling you what to buy but IMHO you have set a decent budget so don't stray from it if both you and your wife are happy with it. (Happy wife, happy life.;))

I'd look at tower speakers for the Fronts. I'd look at a heavy duty Mounting Bracket for the TV that would let you shift it (when you want to have a HT experience - not just to watch the news..) toward the alcove and down towards eye /ear level. (See marked up photo attached.) I'd hang the Center Channel from the Bracket under the TV or on top.

I have both a 5.1 setup for 3D TV and a 6.1 set up in a different room. The 6.1 is definitely more interesting when watching some Movies. I have capability to add "high" fronts to my much newer 5.1 setup, but I have to forget about it (Remember Happy wife, happy life.;))

If I wasn't an electrician / technician and was going to get someone else to wire up my system, I'd be really tempted to install extra ceiling speakers above the fronts and in the rear which would allow you to take advantage of Dolby Atmos (if it ever really takes off ), or the newer DTS X (which has some great reviews). I'm still a fan of discrete speakers for the ones at ear level.

I'll post again on the Speakers and Receiver but I already have an idea what I'd recommend.

Gents,

I skimmed over parts and failed to notice Skeeter has started buying bits and pieces already. You can't go wrong buying a good Sub to start. I was going to head him over to the Pioneer SP-PK52FS 5.0 (forget the SUB) Floorstanding Speaker System for the rest as I think the Sub in this system was the weakest link. If he watched sales on Amazon and /or Best Buy he could pick them up for $400 total.

I'm a huge Fan of the Sony STR-DN1050 (I own one, and had a 1040 for a while. See review of the older STR-DN1040 on Audioholics). It will soon be replaced with a STR-DN1060 with even more features (like Automation, multi-Room control). These list at $600 and are far more bang for the $ than any other receiver up to $1,000. I checked them all out before going to the Sony. The Sony STR-DN1050 will begin heavy discounting soon; so if Skeeter wants to buy now and not wait for Atmos /DTS X then he can save a few $.

So with the $850 for the SUB, Skeeter would be into this system for $1850 which would let him buy a Sony BDP-S790 Blu ray Player (The is a on Audioholics Video Review on You Tube) for $250 leaving him with $400 for two pairs of in the ceiling speakers and some wire. (Or he could jump for the Oppo BDP-103 Universal Blu-ray Player @ $500 leaving him to stretch $150 for the ceiling speakers => see Audioholics Video Review on You Tube as well)

By the way, all of the components I've suggested are recommended by Audioholics in their
E-Book: Top AV Gear Guide for 2015

I tried to post links to the reviews but wasn't permitted. Sorry :(

Regards,

Jim;)

Thanks Jim for your response. I was sick last week and stuck in bed. I picked up my sierra 1's on Saturday and I have to say they look fantastic. They are a bit large, but definitely look great. Wife wasn't to happy with the size of them, but I told her they'll be fine LOL! My receiver and other speakers were scheduled for delivery on Saturday, but never got delivered. Hopefully I can get everything installed by this weekend and I'm just waiting on my echo 15 to be built. All in all, I think this system will be more than I need but there is never anything wrong with that!

Thank goodness you didn't get towers then. :) Your wife will be easily won over when she hears them I'm sure. Many of us have been through similar situations.

Skeeter,

I hope it all works out for you. I did check out the Denon AVR-S900W and the reviews /specs are quite decent. (I don't know if it will play FLAC files natively as that's a big deal for me these days. But maybe not for you. ;))

I'm a bit old school in that I need to usually hear Speakers before buying them. (Other Electronics not so much.) But I even bought my last Sub, and some 5.0 speakers for a basement system I'm trying to put together on the cheap, based solely on name brands, and limited reviews in the last few months. So you can teach an old dog new tricks. It just takes some getting used to putting the cash out without any real personal experience with the goods.

I hope your experience is a positive one.

Regards,

Jim ;)

My contractor is coming next week to run my wires. I'll post some pics once the wire is ran!

Finally got the wire installed on Tuesday and I put in all the speakers yesterday. The wife didn't like the bookshelf speakers lol but oh well. I'm still waiting on the sub. I used the microphone that came with the receiver to do the measurements, but it sounded terrible. I couldn't even hear the rear speakers with the volume turned up 75% since it turned down the volume of the rears so much. I'll have to manually play with it for sometime till I'm happy with it. Overall everything turned out nice. I'll post some pictures up in a day or so. I was to tired after mounting all the speakers to take pictures.

You won't hear the rear speakers all the time unless you use some sort of virtual surround mode. True surround signal only comprises I'd guess 5% of a typical movie's audio content. The surrounds shouldn't be obvious. Besides, your receiver probably cuts their level more than you'd expect because they're closer to the measurement mic than any of your other speakers. If you've got "Rise of the Guardians" on Blu-Ray, that's a nice flick for surround content when Pitch does his flitting through the shadows all around the room thing. The first "X-Men" movie when Professor Xavier is leading Logan out of the clinic is another good one.

Is it the size that your wife doesn't like? Have you played her favorite music on your new system yet? Well, maybe she'll come around once your sub arrives and you get it inserted and leveled.

My wife told me yesterday that I've turned her into an audio snob. She just realized recently that she doesn't like what her car stereo sounds like. It used to be that she didn't pay much attention or care. That made me so happy!

Anyway, yeah, make with the pics already.

Time to install some MB Quart in her car!
