My friend who is putting together his first HT set up has a nice oppertunity. We went to the local HT store listend to a few speakers, he REALY REALLY like the Klipsch towers. A employee came in after a while and after talking to him he said he could do brand new RF-82 for 300 a piece. We werent able to listen to them, and there in black. Other than color and the horn tweeter, I cant find a downside. But even at that hes not sure if he should pick them up. What would you all do?

Buy them and sell on ebay?

Honestly, I wouldn't buy Klipsch. But, you did say "what would you do?":)

A rush decision or purchase of speakers (mains in particular) without listening to them often leads to one thing: upgradeitis. Take it from me and others here that will attest to this, I learned the hard way...

While the RF-82s might be exactly what your friend is looking for, speaker preference is quite subjective and without actually listening to RF-82s (unless he's heard them before), he might wind up with mains that are okay, but not exactly what he wanted. I've heard some Klipsch that sounded great (RF-5s, RF-7s and Klipschorns), but I've also heard some other Klipsch models that didn't sound so great.

As your mains are the core of your system, I would strongly recommend having your friend listen to them to make sure they are for him, in-home if at all possible.... -TD

If he likes them, then I don't see a downside. And there is always Audiogon if they don't fit the bill....

Well we picked them up. Our thought process was it was to good of a deal to pass up, and we CAN return them. He liked klipsch everytime weve audtioned speakers, allthough were not 100% positive that hes heard these models in particular. Were gonna hook them up to my system and see how he likes them for now, mostly because he dosent have any thing BUT theses speakers, and also because he likes how mine sound alot so it will give him a good A-B comparison.

If you're saying that this is going to be his first real system I'm sure he will be pleased with it. If he finds that he really gets into the HiFi audio thing he will likely upgrade in the future and now he'll have good setup to start with and compare any possible investments in the future with.

Also, when you guys do the A/B test be sure that you listen to each set of speakers at exactly the same volume otherwise your test will be quite useless. You should also have a very short delay between switching from one set to the other.
