Need help please with avr

I'm sorry if this has been addressed, couldn't find it in any searches. I recently picked up a yamaha aventage rx-a670. Ran the auto calibration, then tried to set up my speaker levels with an spl. Problem is that the test tone volume is so low that even if I crank it up to its highest setting(+10db) it dosent even reach 50db on the spl. am I doing something wrong? Am I supposed to bump up the volume on the avr as well as the speaker level? I am new at all of this but I'm afraid my avr may be no good? I'm totally lost. Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong or what I should be doing would be appreciated. Thanks.

Note- I had an old pioneer reciever before picking up the Yamaha that had loud teat tones..... which is why I'm worried the new one may be no good.

Looking in the manual under test tone it only indicates it can be turned on/off and to use it for adjusting speaker balance or equalizer....no mention of manual calibration/level output other than they are "output at high volume. Ensure that the test tones do not frighten small children." Maybe it's meant only for use with YPAO?

Are the test tones with YPAO louder than when you tried manually?

It was an opem box purchase, and did not have the YPAO. I was not worried about it because I figured I could just calibrate it with an spl for level and tape measure for distance. Could there be a way to remedy it? I didn't see anything in the manual on tesy tone out put either. But why would would the aventage line not let you manually calibrate?

For the auto calibration I tried using the maac mic from my pioneer. Didn't work too well. Sorry I should have mentioned that

If it is an open box, the settings might have been messed up. Try do a factory reset to default setting and see how it goes.

Yea I had the same thought, after re set, and then upgrading the firmware to its current version its still the same. I will say this, when I ran the auto calibration, even with a pionner mic the levels got louder than what they are when I just run the test tones.......... I wonder if there is a reference level that I should have the master volume at? I've read that it should be 0db and then adjusted with the spl......

You may need to call Yamaha and ask a few questions.
I know on my Onkyo, not using auto cal or if it even has it, when I run the test signal the master volume automatically goes to 0 and the tone that is played should be leveled to 75 dB SPL.

Actualy you're spot on. I called them. I have to set the volume to 0db to perform my own calibrations.

If you are doing it manually using the unit's generated test tone then you should set volume to 0.

Actually I have not experienced any Yammy since my little RX-V659 so I should have been clear that it was just my educated guess.

Sometimes the distances set by room correction software doesn't always translate to literal distances. Distances are used sometimes to deal with phasing issues to give you a more neutral response. I sit 13.5 ft from my subs, and my receiver set the distances to 19ft. I ended up bumping them another 2ft back and things are sounding very good right now.
