I am looking for a new receiver that will allow me to watch tv in one room while listening to a CD in my backyard. I was hoping to spend around $600. Any suggestions. Thanks

I was looking at the Denon 697CI receiver. Would that be a good choice? Thanks

A couple ?s

Wally,

A couple ?s to help refine recommendations.

1) Do you intend to create now (or in the near future) a multi-channel home theater sound system (i.e. a 5.1 or 7.1 set of speakers)?

2) Tell us more about your tv watching room; size (LxWxH), any unusual acoustic features like cathedral ceilings, large windows, openings to other rooms, etc.

I currently have a Sony STR-DG710 receiver for my home. I had speakers installed when I got the house and just recently installed outside speakers. With this receiver whatever I have on inside the house is what I can listen to outside. So, I am sure I need a multi zone receiver that will allow me to listen to something different outside. Please tell me if I am incorrect. Thanks

Wally,

You are correct, you want a multi-zone (2 zone) receiver.

A couple notes: for most Zone 2s, if you connect a source (CD, DVD, cable box, etc.) via a digital connection (toslink, hdmi, etc.) you will also need to connect that same source via analog (two wire red/white) in order for the Zone 2 to work

The other question is do you want only a stereo set-up or do you need more.?
- The model you specified, Denon 697CI, is a multi-zone receiver, but it is a stereo receiver.
-That is why I asked if you intend to set up a 5.1 (or larger) home theater now or in the future, because the 697 will not support that option.

What is the indoor speaker set-up the home came with?

A no on the 697CI

Wally,

I took a look at the online manual. The 697CI, although a good stereo receiver, will not meet your stated requirements--unless you purchase a separate outboard amplifier for the outdoor zone.

I do not recommend that course of action, instead get a 5.1 or 7.1 Home Theater multi-zone receiver with two assignable amplifiers.

Sticking with Denon, the AVR-1611 or above has those features. Yamaha, Onkyo, or Marantz are some other reputable and affordable AVR manufacturers.

You also need to define the number and type of sources you intend to connect. For instance, TV Cable Box (HDMI), CD (toslink), DVD (HDMI), etc. to ensure the receiver will support your needs.
