Received a fairly nice Xmas present -Pioneer 50" elite, Yamaha RX-v2700 A/V and just purchases a Sony BDP-S1. I was going to get them to install the system until they told me the price. It was as much as the monitor. (185.00 to pull the HDMI cable from the DVD to the monitor thru the wall) I have no problem running cables and hanging equipment but I am puzzled by the configuration I was given.

The configuration was the HDMI from the DVD to the monitor and a optical cable from the DVD to the A/V unit. (He mentioned the word quirky in the same breath as Bluray.)

My questions is :

The A/V unit has 3 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output. Could I not connect the DVD to the A/V and the A/V to the monitor using HDMI cables? I am under the impression (right or wrong) that using the HDMI eliminates the use of any other cables. Will I miss out on anything?

Sorry for the lack of knowledge on my end the present really came out of right field. Usually i read up on these things

You are correct. You will be able to connect all your hdmi cables to the receiver, then one hdmi from the receiver to the monitor. He may be under the impression the video quality is better when going straight to the monitor, but that makes switching a hassle and the need for multiple remotes and extra, unnecessary cables. The entire reason you bought the Yamaha 2700 is for video hdmi switching over a 2600 or even a 2500 model, both of which could be had for quite a bit less which feature the same audio qualities.

I have heard that HDMI performs a "handshake" between all components connected, and defaults to the settings supported by all the components: i.e., the DVD player supports 5.1, the receiver supports 5.1, the plasma supports stereo souns, so the HDMI won't pass the 5.1 signal to the receiver since the TV can't use it. Now, I only heard this on Thursday from a friend who read it in the online "Perfect Vision", so take it with a grain of salt-I've only ever used separate audio and digital lines.

Bryan...any custom installers on the forum want to chime in?
