Hi. New here and I'm hoping someone can help because I'm at wits end trying g to figure it out. I ha've an onkyo txsr 309 receiver and am limited to what audio settings I can use. I can't access any of the dolby pro logic audio settings or any of the Dolby settings. I have a ps3 wired up to the video hdmi plug on the receiver. I can only choose between direct, stereo, mono, and all the original listening modes but can't listen to a movie in any of the Dolby sound settings. I'm currently watching inception and cannot access Dolby sound settings either. If anyone can help with this it would be veeeeery much appreciated. Thankyou

How many speakers do you have connected to the receiver?

I've checked that and done the audio settings setup automatically. It detects 7.1 and 5.1 Dolby settings.....does it just display as something different on the receiver? I currently have the receiver set to 'multich' and the talking is playing through the center speaker and the front and back left and right are carrying music and sound.... but the fronts play the same as backs.... should the surround rears not play certain background noises themselves? It's close but not sure if it's using dolby sound..

Just so we're clear, you have the PS3 hooked up to the receiver via HDMI and nothing else.

Under audio selector do you have HDMI selected?

So under the listening mode you have multi-channel selected?

What kind of audio does the PS3 say it is outputting?

In the Setup Menu, under "Sp Config" ensure that setting titled "Subwoofer" and "Center, Surround" are set at "Large" or "Small" and not "None".

Refer to Pg29, 31 of User Manual.

If you have your PS3 set to output Dolby Digital and DTS over HDMI [verify this] then you want to set the receiver to "Direct" instead of "Multichannel." The Direct mode [per manual page 24] takes the signal exactly how the receiver gets it and uses it. Multichannel is for use with a source that has already decoded multichannel audio and then downmixes it if you don't have the proper speakers [say you have a 5.1 source, but only have 3.1 speakers].

Edit: The manual is confusing me, I cannot verify that what i said above is correct for Direct mode.

Speaker config is set properly. Hdmi from ps3 to receiver and hdmi from receiver to tv. Ps3 settings are fine from what I see. I have the audio setting on multichannel cause it sounds the best so far. I tried the direct setting and it only puts sound through the front speakers and nothing from the rear surrounds at all.

Well something is obviously wrong, you mind listing all the PS3 settings?

If direct has nothing coming from the surrounds at all, even when you're sure you are playing the multi-channel track of a DVD or bluray it sounds like the PS3 isn't set to send multichannel audio to the receiver.

Furthermore if there is audio at all while you're playing a DVD/BD, and the receiver is not in DD/DTS mode, it means the settings on the PS3 MUST be wrong.

I really appreciate this help. Gonna be home shortly and I'll post the ps3 settings. Thanks again.

In ps3 sound settings, dolby digital 5.1, plus, true hd, hi res audio and master audio are all checked. Linear pcm 2 channel is all checked and linear pcm 5.1 are all checked.

All the dolby digital settings are check marked... the linear pcm 2 channels are checked and linear pcm 5 are checked. 7.1's are not checked in the audio output settings menu of the ps3.

Is "Audio Multi-Output" turned on? I'm grasping for straws at this point, but this could cause the issues you're having.

It's in Sound Settings, right below "Audio Output Settings"

Also in Video settings verify the following setting:

BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI) = Bitstream

Hey. The bday/DVD audio output format was set to linear pcm. Should it be bitstream? And the audio multi output was turned off. That should be on?

So I've changed it to bitstream and the multi output is off and I can select Dolby digital for sound settings now! This is the first time I've seen it on the receiver. Red lettering saying hd master dolby. I think I'm gonna have to rewatch a lot of movies now! I was thinking it could sound better and it definitely does.

Woohoo! Nothing like getting that nagging itch scratched.

Rewatch and buy new BDs :D.

Oh yah! I'm assuming all is right now....I can now select the dolby digital sound setting on the receiver. Some movies it displays as 'Dolby d' and some it displays as 'dts master audio'.TThere aren't any other Dolby setting options that come up but I'm assuming that whatever it displays as is the highest setting and the intended setting for surround systems?
