Need help buying a good pair of headphones

I need to buy a headphone to play games. My laptop also has a Blu-ray drive, and its soundcard has an optical out port. So I could make use of DTS or Dolby Digital when I watch movies. I don't have a receiver though. I saw these headphones on eBay and was wondering how good they are.

Pioneer SE-DRS3000C Digital Wireless Headphone System - $400 on eBay

Specifications:

* Driver Unit: 50mm diameter
* Frequency Response: 10 - 24,000Hz
* Mass: 350 g (headphones) 720g (transmitter)
* Formats: Dolby Digital (Surround EX), Dolby Pro Logic II / DTS, PCM (Fx =32 KHz, 44.1 KHz, 48KHz), MPEG-2 AAC
* Input: Digital: Opto-square (2), coaxial, Analog: stereo RCA connector
* Power: : DC 9V
* Transmission: 2.4GHz uncompressed wireless transmission
* Transmission range: 30 meters

Included Accessories:

* AC adapters
* optical digital cable (1.5m)
* rechargable battery

Should I look for ones that say 5.1/7.1? Will those really sound much better? I've never used good headphones before. I was hoping to avoid buying a receiver right now so that I can buy it later when I set up a home theatre.

I would not recommend the pioneer headphones. The sony mdr 7506 is a great headphone and costs about 100 bucks. I have been using these forever in the studio and for live mixing.They are uncolored and sound great.I have tried a few different sets of phones and the wireless phones were the worst. They do not transfer the full spectrum of frequencies. Save yourself some cash and get the sony 7506. You can buy them at sweetwater or musicians friend or anywhere online. Best of luck...

But what if I want Dolby, DTS, etc? The sony one does not say that in the specs. So I would need to buy a receiver too, then?

two things to consider....it's not sold in the US, so Pioneer USA will not support it and it's 2.4Ghz which means it's going to compete for clean spectrum with every wireless phone, WiFi access point, and microwave oven in your nearby environment.

5.1 headphones are still rather "geekie". Most work, but they only approximate a 5.1 system of speakers for directionality.

For the $400 you are considering spending, I would recommend a receiver and Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic or AKG K701 headphones

consider a refurbished Onkyo or Marantz receiver from a factory authorized reseller like www.accessories4less.com

You might want to look at Sennheiser RS 140 RF

I have a pair of Sennheiser RS 140 RF Wireless Headphone System which I wear when I mow the lawn. Thier only problem is that the range is limited to about 100-120feet.

Otherwise they have great sound, recharge when put back on their stand and cost less the Pioneers you are looking at. Price is now $154.95 with free shipping at IB&H Photography
