Hello all,

I've inherited some audio equipment and I am running into problems while setting it up.

My receiver is a pioneer sx-2700 and a denon dl-125

I have two unknown speakers which I will be able to put the picture up after my post count is 5. They appear to be loud speakers.

A 15'' AudioCentron subwoofer and 5 speakers that came with the denon receiver (two loud speakers a center speaker and two rear speakers)

1.) My first question is while hooking up the two speakers in the picture to the pioneer receiver they both play well. Then when adding just one of the rear speakers from the denon to the receiver one of the speakers in the picture doesnt play and the denon speaker does. Is it a power issue?

2.) Is there any way i could utilize all of these speakers to play on one tv?. For instance, hooking up receiver to receiver to tv?

(i'll be able to add pictures of all my equipment soon to help)

Any comments or recommendations are greatly appreciated. Even ideas about my set up. I'm open to buying new equipment if necessary, but would like to utilize the equipment I have if its worth it.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge. I know these questions are pretty simple, but I cannot seem to find an answer on google. Thanks for the help!

I don't understand how you hooked this stuff up. Pics would help.

I know I have all the pics on photobucket but it won't let me add links or embed images until i have 5 posts.

I'll try to best explain it in words.

The pioneer receiver is hooked up to two speakers (lets call them loud speakers) and a rear speaker. They are hooked up by speaker wires into the back of the receiver

When the two loud speakers are hooked up only. They both will power correctly and sound perfect.

When I attach the rear speaker to the receiver then power on the receiver. Only one loud spekaer will play sound and the rear speaker will also play sound, but the other loud speaker will play no sound.

I hope that clears it up. I also have other questions as well but that is the highest priority right now. Thank you so much!

That Pioneer receiver is an old stereo receiver. It is not supposed to have rear speakers. It has A/B switching for two set of speakers to be used in different rooms but not played at the same time. You just need two front speakers. If you use four at once, you are in danger of blowing the receiver.

If it is surround sound you want, you need a modern AV receiver.

I can find no information at all on a Denon dl-125.

Thank you so much! ....that clears up that issue. I looked at the wrong part number on the denon receiver it is a denon d 1250. When it was bought it came with two rear speakers two loud speakers and a center speaker.

When i'm able to post pics I'm going to need some help figuring out what to do with the two speakers that came with the old stereo receiver. They may be the best speakers i have and want to include with the setup.

I also inhereted 5 speaker sony deal. Part numbers are two ss-ts51 (surround right/left), ss-CT51 (center), two ss-TS52

The denon speakers are usc-30's

The denon are in nice wood boxes. The Sony's are made of plastic. So i figured the denon's were better?

EDIT: forgot to mention the subs...a sony ss-WS52b and the other one is huge and looks like something that should be in a cinema its a Audio Centron ACE-1t

I read some threads where people mentioned that AC was a bad company that went out of business so i'm guessing i dont have much of a sub at this point.

My goal is to have a surround sound and at least have it be pretty decent. A friend of mine recommending me to buy a receiver and to test out all my speakers and go from there.

As far as my whole set up goes I'm building an HTPC where all my blu ray movies and such will be played from.

If you have any recommendations it would be great!

Thanks so much for being patient with me

There is a 'post pad' thread area in "Site Suggestions & Feedback"
Add a few random posts, so you can post you pics

That Denon is part of a very old surround mini system. So old it is off the Denon archive. The last trace I can find is someone selling a used one in 2007 in Canada.

from your description I don't think anything on this equipment list is going to be any use to you, certainly not as part of an HTPC as the unit is not going to have modern connectivity, like HDMI.

Ok thank you that clears up a lot.

Here's the pic of the unidentified speaker...just to see if its worth doing anything with. It says 0015588 on the back.

Heres the AC ACE-1t subwoofer....is it worth implementing into my HTPC

Is the sony speakers and sub worth doing anything with? The ss models i mentioned earlier.

The AC thing is an old PA speaker...think DJ or band use but not a subwoofer. The other speaker is exactly as good as you think it is.

Well up straight you have had a bunch of junk palmed off on you.

The only thing salvageable is the Pioneer receiver.

The HTIB Denon is not worth doing anything with. Plastic speakers are useless.

The speaker is a ported design with cone midrange and tweeter, so not much can be expected from that.

I don't see a sub. You have a two way with HF horn. The picture is blurry and it looks to be like some sort of active instrument speaker, but it is not a sub.

I would keep the Pioneer and go shopping for a pair of decent speakers.

If it HT you want from an HTCP then you need to start from scratch.

I hope you understand a lot more about computers then you do audio, as if you don't, I don't see you putting together an HTCP that will work anytime soon.

My experience with audio is nil, but i have a high exeperience with computers....i've been running blu-ray movies and such to my hd screens for years. Thats why i'm stuck where i'm at. I was told the AC was a subwoofer when it was given to me. Thank you for pointing out to me that it's not.

Before I inherited all this junky equipment i was planning a home theatre build for my 65'' hitachi 1080i projection tv that i also inherited.

The build was going to look somewhat like a polk psw10, cs10, Onkyo tx-sr608, two polk monitor 50's , polk owm3 surround speakers.....

but that configuration is just coming out too expensive. And when i consider other options such as buying all in one home theatre systems and reading reviews and forums it seems there are problems with the systems not being up to standard.

So seeing that i dont want to have junky equipment and want at least decent HD sound. What would my best option be? To go with an all in one system or buy receiver and speakers individually as the money is available?

Such as buying in sequence: 1.) receiver 2.)center speaker 3.) loud speakers 4.)surround speakers 5.)subwoofer

Is that the best route?

Sorry for the clear lack of experience and knowledge on my part. I'm hoping to learn from all this and i want to avoid making bad purchases. Your patience and help is greatly appreciated!

First out the junk and don't buy more.

I would get a decent midrange receiver, definitely not entry level.

Then buy the best pair of speakers you can afford. This latter will be the most important purchase you make, so make this purchase carefully.

Then purchase a matching center, then a sub and then surrounds and rear backs if you want.

Make sure you get a receiver with pre outs, so you can add external amplification if you wish down the road.

Thank you!..that was exactly what i was looking for. Do you have any recommendations on a solid midranged receiver and the pair of speakers?

Is their a better way to spend my money then on monitor 50's? And since the sr-608 doesn't have preouts do you have a suggestion? Since i'll only be able to purchase the receiver and pair of speakers at this point?

I would get a receiver like this.

That's an appropriate quality starting point.

I really don't like to recommend speakers. You need to listen to some. Lets say I'm not a Polk fan.

We need a budget after you have allowed for the receiver and we need if you are looking for a bookshelf system or towers for mains.

One thing that needs to be added to the speaker shopping advice given is to be certain the speakers you choose do have a matching center, and that you will be able to have a place for it. (dimensions)

Budget after the suggested receiver would be $600-$900, but as i'll be buying stepwise I can increase that if thats what really needs to be done.

I'm looking for a bookshelf system.

As far as speaker suggestions i really dont mind. I would like to know what you think because clearly my thoughts are so inexperienced they are negligent.

Theres a huge liquidation sale going on right now at our city's "lansing center". I'll be able to hear different options there which will be beneficial.

Thanks for pointing that out. I will have room to place the center at any height desired.

Just be sure to audition speakers as a pair, and not the whole system.

I would also like to add to be sure the center is of equal quality/ability as the mains. It's getting better, but there are many companies where the center is just not up to the quality/ability of the matching mains.

Okay thank you!....do you know of any center and main combinations at a decent price that accomplish this? and how do i check for the matching quality and ability?
