I run my computer audio out over optical to an old receiver but it's not something most people have the will to do. Heck most people still rip to lossy formats.

One of the last Sound Blasters or one of the last cheap cards with a decent headphone amp maybe. Look at some of the offerings from HT Omega.

The HT Omega card is the best one I've owned and I've owned many cards in the past 15 years. My last card was a Creative (Crapative???) Audigy Pro 4 with the small console - supposed to be 'dead silent' according to Creative - but when I emailed support they said 'some' hiss is normal with any card. I guess they've never heard an HT Omega card. Great sounding card and it IS dead silent when nothing is playing. Creative blamed the hiss on my computer - the same one that the HT Omega card is dead silent on.
I'd have kept my Turtle Beach card but they didn't support XP 64 bit with the one I had.
