Need center channel advice

First post here. Just set up a cobbled together sound system for a small home theater in an 14x18x7 ft. basement room. Using Symphonic Line Legatos for the front right and left speakers. These are full range nearly 40 kg speakers that go down to nearly 30 hz. They are quite similar to Odyssey Lorelei speakers if anyone has had experience with those. Purchased an Aperion Intimus 5c for the center channel and Intimus 4bs for the surrounds. As I don't have a good frame of reference for multi-channel sound I wonder how much better it might be with a higher quality center channel in particular. In other words, is there a better match for Symphonic Line speakers (than won't break the bank) and how much difference is it likely to make? Aperion does have a lenient return policy so I could try the next model up, the Versus I think it is called. Hope this isn't too vague.
Thanks, Jim

I have never heard of those speakers, let alone heard them.

However they are German two ways, that sell in Europe for just over 7K Euros!

The speakers uses a not very impressive Scanspeak mid woofer, paired with one of the Reveltor tweeters. The woofer is running into significant trouble below 2K, it is a a low Qt driver, so I bet it is pretty thin on the bottom end making sub use mandatory. I would bet those speakers have a sonic signature, from the woofer.

Now it is vital to match the center to the mains very closely or you are better off dispensing with the center channel altogether.

If you want a center to match you will have to build it or have it built.

You would purchase two of the woofers and a tweeter. If Symphonic will share the crossover for the Legatos with you, then it would be a simple matter to redesign the crossover, so the center has an identical sonic signature to the mains. I don't see another solution, since that German outfit does not produce any center speakers.

Thanks for the advice. Not really able to pursue a do it yourself speaker project although in the right hands I'm sure it would yield excellent results. Need to find something off the shelf. The Legatos, by the way, use a mid woofer called
GÖRLICH-PODZSUS(not shouting, just copied from the website) not the Scanspeak in the Loreleis. Actually, not too thin on the bottom end to my ear.

Thanks again.

Sorry, I relied on a review on Audiogon. I could not find a picture of the speaker.

This is the bass driver I think.

They are a sandwich foam construction similar to Harold J Leaks sandwich speakers of long ago.

These speakers are hand crafted to order. I think it will be fruitless to try and match those speakers. I would use a phantom center. If those speakers are any good, that will work out fine and be much better than a badly matched center.

If you really want a center, you will have to contract to have one built to order.

Thanks again. By phantom center I take it you mean to unplug the CC and let the AVR create a center channel from the two fronts? AVR by the way is a Marantz SR5005.

On a similar note, will it be just as difficult to match a sub-woofer as a CC? Looking at the SVS PC12-NDS.

Thanks.

Yes let the AVR create the center from the fronts.

A sub will not be a problem to match. SVS are good subs.

Options

One other option would be to try to locate a single Legato and use that for the center channel. It would be perfectly timbre matched to the front L/R pair of Legatos you have now. More than likely, you may have to purchase the Legato in a pair.

Good luck

Went ahead and took the center channel out and it sounded fine, perhaps even better than with the center channel in--less disjointed if that makes sense. So the Aperion CC will go back and an SVS PC12-NSD sub is on the way. I think we can take our time looking for center channel that matches better.

Thanks again for the replies.

One last thing if anyone is interested. I brought a pair of Rogers LS35a's out of storage and substituted them for the rear surrounds. It seems sacrilegious to use the Rogers in this way but the system sounds great! Just for fun I also hooked up the Rogers in my two channel system. Incredible that speakers I've had since 1977 still sound so terrific. So both Aperion CC and surrounds go back and we wait for the new SVS sub.

Happy New Year to all and thanks again for the advice.

FWIW I also run my system with phantom center and like it that way. I know that question often comes up so I thought I'd one more data point...
