Need assistance on using Optical VS HDMI

I am in the process of creating a small Home Theater in my home.
Currently have a TV & using it by it's self.
Set up will be: Samsung TV, Yamaha Receiver and Klipsch Speakers

Primary objective: Keep it simple vs complex to operate.
Trying to avoid that phone call from the wife saying:
"I can't get the sound to work on the TV" & I am at work & 100 miles away

What I would like to do is run everything thru the TV & output the TV sound to the receiver.
That way, anything watched on TV can easily be switched from TV speakers to the Surround Sound via the Receiver by just changing the TV sound output via the TV remote from TV speakers to Receiver.
What I need assistance with is THIS:
Which is best way to connect OUTPUT from the TV & INPUT to the receiver.
HDMI or OPTICAL?
I have TV connected to RECEIVER via Optical currently & can not get any sound thru the speakers.
Have not tried HDMI yet, thought it best to reach out for some advise at this stage.
I am also open any & all suggestions of a better way to do this.

Equipment List:
TV: Samsung QN65Q60DDF (Less than a year old)
Has 3 HDMI ports (I have located & tagged the eARC port)

Receiver: Yamaha RX-V-481D (Has HDMI Ports - Unsure if eARC Capable)

Speakers: Klipsch: 2 front, 2 rear, 1 Center, 1 Subwoofer.

Source Equipment: Direct TV Satellite Box, KD Links MP3 Player

Pretty simple system

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE

I would run everything thru the avr myself. If you run everything thru the tv, all you'll be sending to the avr is audio. HDMI is more capable if eARC capable but for a 5.1 setup the optical would be fine.

Did you check input assignment in your avr to make sure it is set to optical for the input you're using?
