Ok, so I've figured out everything except this part.

I'd like to buy an equalizer but it seems like there aren't a lot of companies making them any more.

My receiver is HK-3490.

If you have any recommendations, please let me know. Also, since I have digital input on the HK receiver, perhaps a digital equalizer will be better? Not really sure. Anyways, please help!

What do you want to equalize(sources) ?
The cheapest option would be regular multi-band equalizer if you sources are analog, but with digital sources you'll have to use analog audio pre-out on your HK avr - means you'll have to get external amplifier.

HK-3490 should have some sort of limited EQ already built-in as most modern AVRr do.

The mainstream audio manufacturers don't, but the ones from the '70s through the '80s weren't all that great, anyway. If this is for 2 channel, look at Parts Express or Musician's Friend for Behringer, Art Audio, DBX, Rane, etc. A multi-channel receiver has no good way to equalize all channels with an outboard unit and unless a 2 channel receiver or integrated amp has a tape or processor loop that works when a source is selected, that won't work, either.

The Behringer Feedback Destroyer (FBD) would work with your 3490. You have preamp outs and main amp inputs on the back - the Behringer FBD inputs would be fed from the preamps - then the FBD output signal would be injected into the main amp inputs.
Unless you need minute EQ'ing the 1124 FBD would probably do what you need.

The 3490 also has Main-Ins, very EZ to connect an Equalizer in-line.
3490 Pre-Outs go to the equalizer's L/R line inputs and the equalizer's L/R outputs go into the Main-Ins...
Crucial point is to make sure not to clip the Line Outs (Equalizer) or Main-Ins (3490)..

Just my $0.01.. ;)

I don't recommend using the BFD for the main channels. It's very noisy.

If you want an EQ with maximum power and versatility, get a Behringer DCX2496.

If you want a simple 10 band EQ for simple tonal adjustments, a superb model is the Pioneer GR-777 from the 90's. Low noise, super low distortion, superb build quality. It was sold as one of Pioneer's higher end products, and you will not be disappointed if you simply want a 10 band graphic EQ. They sold for about $400 in the early 90's, which would be about $700 by today's inflation level. But you can find them on eBay now for about $100-$150 in superb condition. Be sure the one you buy comes with the remote.

There were two versions of this unit. One with solid hardwood sides (for the Premiere line) and one with standard all black metal chassis. Other than this cosmetic part, the units were identical. Both are made in Japan, where Pioneer builds their highest end product lines. Lower lines are built in Malaysia/Asia.

AudioControl sells the Bijou, a 5.1 THX certified analog graphic equalizer, as well as a digital equalizer for even more $$$$.

Virtually all high-end receivers these days have built-in equalization of some sort. However, it’s usually buried in a menu, not immediately accessible like the outboard EQs that are the focus of this thread.
