OK, this might be a bit off topic as this doesn't apply to home theather or the like, but this group would seem to be about as bright on the topic as can be, so...

I play electric guitar and in order to learn new stuff, I like to play along to MP3s. I use a special effects pedal for my guitar (allows me to make the guitar have different sounds). the pedal has a single 1/4" mono input (for the guitar) and a single 1/4" mono output to connect to either an amp, PA, or headphones. Lovely. I plug my headphones in and I can hear my guitar without the need for blowing out the windows and waking the fmaily.

The puzzle is how do I feed the MP3 player into the headphones as well AND I need this to be as ultra-portable as possible. I have a fairly small 8-channel mixer that would handle this job no problem, but I want something I can fit in my pocket...

Some guitar pedals have an additional line-in that bypasses the guitar effects for this very reason...mine does not. Therefore, if I split the input on the pedal and plug both the guitar and MP3 player into it, the MP3 audio is distorted based on the guitar effects I'm using.

I have been trying to use a Y adapter of sorts in order to accomplish this. I plugged a traditional 1/4" Y adapter into the pedal's output, then the MP3 player and headphones into the legs of the Y. Unfortunately, I think the direction of the signal is causing the guitar sounds from the pedal and the MP3 player to kill eachother and I can barely hear either one when they are both plugged in. If I remove on or the other, I can hear the remaining device fine. I think it's based on the design of the Y. Usually, a Y like this would be used to split the single input (the side the guitar pedal is plugged into) OUT to 2 speakers/headphones, etc. The way i have it setup, one of those output legs is taking the input from the MP3 player. Doesn't work.

I have found a small mixer that would work (like the iPOD mini DJ mixers) but honestly, I don't want to spend this much. I SHOULD be able to find a simple cable to do this but I've struck out at Radio Shack and the guitar shop.

I need: a Y adapter that takes 2 inputs (guitar pedal and MP3 player) and joins them into a single output (headphones). I have plenty of plug adapters so i can go from the MP3 player's 1/8 to 1/4", RCA, etc.

Anyone have a suggestion?
Thanks for humoring me!

Unfortunately you absolutely need a mixer to do this. The only cheaper solution would be to build one out of a couple of op amps. You can't do this with Y connectors, as each source needs buffering. The mixer will have the advantage that you can set levels. This is as small and cheap as I can find.
