I am rebuilding my beach house and would like to have speakers in different rooms and on a deck. do I need to buy a amplifier to power a speaker selector to control the speakers in 3 rooms (each with its separate in wall volume control) using a 2 zone receiver. Ideally, I would like to listen to music in my kitchen (with in wall volume control for that room) then sit in my dinning room (again in wall volume for that room) and listen, Then walk out to my deck and listen to speakers out there (w/volume control mounted outside). Please help, I'm doing all this myself

I find the most simple and cost effective system is what I installed in my home.. I have a few more zones but besides that its about the same system...

Amazon.com: Monoprice 109995 4-Channel Speaker Selector: Electronics
Amazon.com: Yamaha NS-IW280CWH 6.5" 3-Way In-Ceiling Speaker System (White, Pair): Electronics
Amazon.com: Pyle Home PVC1 Wall Mount Rotary Volume Control Knob: Electronics
Dayton Audio APA150 150 Watt Free Standing Powered Stereo/Mono Audio Amplifier - Smarthome

besides that all you need is a set of rca cables, and in wall speaker wire I used mono price 16/4. I like the yamaha in celing speakers a lot, they are affordable and they sound excellent... I have them through out my home and they sound great.. I like that apa150 amp too, that is a great value for ab power, it does have a fan but I never hear it, I do not use that amp for my whole house system though I use an Emotiva UPA200 UPA-200 | 125W x 2 | Emotiva Audio | High-end audio components for audiophiles and videophiles, spanning 2-channel music systems, as well as 5.1 and 7.1 home theaters. Products include multichannel amplifiers, stereo amplifiers, and monoblock amplifi because it matches the rest of the gear in my rack....

good luck, hope this helps, there is another member (BMX) and he is a pro in the field he may chime in, he knows a lot of the higher end stuff very well...

2 ceiling speakers in each. not to elaborate (cost minded) but decent and two outdoor on the deck.

Id definitively go with an impedance matching volume control, similar to this and speaker selector
No reason to pay more than you need to, and as far as impede matching volume controls, IMO you are better off letting the take care of that, you are hooking everything to that box so it will make sure you dont go under 4 ohms.... I have them parts {except the d-box has more zones} and they have hundreds of hours of play with no amp problems.... I have tried this a few different ways, I started with a multi channel amp to feed all the zones and that was problems, after a few methods I found this is the most relliable and least expensive too....

For the minuscule cost difference, Id rather have matching than a protection circuit. If all rooms are playing at once the protection circuit limits watts, lowers volume. We are talking about peanuts for a little piece of mind and overall performance.

I understand that but you are only matching the 2 speakers that go to that volume control, you are hooking multiple voume controls to a single source... so if the volume control makes the load 6 ohms for each pair and you have 3 pairs with 3 volume controls it doens't matter much.... If he used a multi channel amp then yes, its a good idea, but when using a selector and 2 channel amp it does more harm than good.. I started with expensive volume controls, impede matching allen keys to tighten in the cables, very fancy... when a friend of mine told me to try the simple volume control because my sound was shaky and would not go very loud {even with the larger amp}, I agreed, I bought 3 of the new controls and it was night and day.. I don't know why, nor do I care, but it sounds better, and the volume controls have never failed vs replacing multiple matching versions....
